Chapter 1 - The Silver Cuff and the Broken Song

The sound of the crystal champagne glass shattering against the marble floor rang out like a gunshot in the silent ballroom of the Vance Estate.
Dozens of wealthy guests, dressed in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos, stood frozen in place. At the center of the room, six-year-old Noah remained wrapped tightly around the waist of the young maid, his small hands clutching her black uniform apron. His tear-streaked face was buried against her hip, his small shoulders trembling as he repeated the soft, sweet melody he had hummed since he was a baby.
The maid, Elena, didn't move. Her body was completely rigid, her breathing shallow, but tears spilled freely down her cheeks, washing away the dust of the ballroom floor she had spent all afternoon scrubbing.
Slowly, her hand drifted down to her left wrist. She pulled back her faded uniform sleeve, revealing a thin, silver cuff engraved with three flying swallows—a hand-crafted piece of jewelry that caught the bright light of the grand chandeliers overhead.
Standing at the head table, Beatrice Vance—the formidable matriarch of the multi-billion-dollar Vance Shipping Empire—clutched the edge of the mahogany table so hard her knuckles turned pure white.
Her face went from cold, aristocratic disdain to a stark, terrifying ash-gray.
"Where... where did you get that bracelet?" Beatrice rasped, her voice cracking as she took a slow, trembling step forward. "That cuff... that was custom-made in Milan for my daughter, Chloe."
Beside Beatrice, Victoria Vance—the woman everyone in high society had believed was Noah's mother for the past six years—sprang out of her chair, her silk gown rustling violently.
"She stole it!" Victoria shrieked, her voice pitching into a high, frantic register as she pointed a shaking finger at Elena. "She's a cleaning girl! She's been working in the west wing for three weeks! She must have broken into the private vault and stolen Chloe's old jewelry!"
"I didn't steal anything, Victoria," Elena spoke.
Her voice wasn't the quiet, timid voice of a servant. It was clear, deep, and carrying an unmistakable, familiar resonance that made every senior member of the Vance family sit bolt upright in their chairs.
Elena slowly raised her head, looking directly into Beatrice Vance’s eyes.
She reached up with her uninjured hand, unpinned her heavy cleaning cap, and let her long, dark wavy hair fall freely over her shoulders. She wiped the dust from her cheek, revealing a small, faint crescent-shaped scar right above her right brow—a scar Chloe Vance had received when she was eight years old during a riding accident at the family's summer estate.
Beatrice let out a choked, strangled gasp, her hand flying to her mouth.
"Chloe...?" Beatrice whispered, her knees buckling beneath her velvet gown. "My God... Chloe?"
"No!" Victoria screamed, running down the steps of the head table toward them. "She's an impostor! Chloe died six years ago in a hospital fire in Geneva! We buried her! This woman is a scammer trying to claim the family trust!"

Little Noah pulled back slightly from Elena's waist, holding her hand tightly, his dark brown eyes looking up at her face with complete, absolute recognition.
"She sings the swallow song, Grandma," Noah said cleanly, his small voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "Every night when I dream. She's my real mommy."
