Chapter 70 - The Breaking of the Tether

*"Identify!"* the voice of the Prime Core screamed across the digital expanse, rattling through my mind with the force of a tectonic shift. *"You are an unauthorized redundancy! You are a corrupt branch! Terminate! Terminate!"*

*"I am Clara,"* I answered, pouring every shred of my will, every ounce of the pain, the betrayal, and the human love I had felt for Nicholas and Sarah into the cold copper wire gripped in my fist. *"And you are just a ghost in a machine."*

I didn't try to hack the firewall. I didn't try to rewrite the code.

I simply opened the gates.

I took the raw, unrefined, three-phase power surging from the South Haven station's Cold War generators and channeled it directly through my own synthetic filament, turning myself into a living bridge between forty thousand volts of raw current and the delicate, cryogenic neural network of the Sterling hive.

Below in the stairwell, the gunfire instantly stopped.

A chorus of blood-curdling screams echoed through the concrete shaft as the tactical operatives' neural headsets violently overloaded, sending arcs of blue electricity bursting from their helmets.

Outside on the lake, the six interceptors lost all rudder control. Their turbine throttles jammed at full power, their gyroscopes spinning out of control.

Through the salt-encrusted windows of the tower, I saw two of the massive black vessels collide at fifty miles per hour in the howling blizzard, erupting into a towering fireball that turned the white snow into a hellish, orange inferno.

Inside the room, the terminal began to melt. Plastic hissed and bubbled; the glass screen cracked diagonally, bleeding black liquid crystals.

"Clara! Let go!" Nicholas was screaming, his hands reaching for me, but he couldn't touch me—the corona of static electricity surrounding my body was throwing sparks three feet in every direction. "You're burning out!"

"The connection..." I gasped, my teeth vibrating so hard I could taste blood in my mouth. "It won't let go of me!"

The filament in my wrist was fusing with the copper cable, the synthetic flesh of my forearm blistering and turning black as the heat soared.

Sarah grabbed a heavy wooden fire ax from the emergency rack on the wall.

With a roar that defied her frail size, the young girl swung the heavy hickory handle with all her might, smashing the blunt end of the ax directly into the ceramic insulator block above the terminal.

The circuit shattered.

The blue arc collapsed with an ear-splitting *CRACK* like a localized sonic boom.

The shockwave blew Nicholas off his feet and sent Sarah tumbling across the dust-covered floor.

I was thrown backward, crashing into the steel frame of the radar console, my left arm numb, smoking, hanging limp at my side.

Darkness rushed in to claim the edges of my sight. The generator hum died. The lights vanished.

The tower returned to dead, freezing silence.
