Chapter 19 - The Bloodline Ledger

My hands trembled so violently I could barely unhook the silver chain from my neck.
I laid the locket on the desk. Marcus took a small pair of jewelers' forceps, carefully extracting the yellowed onionskin note my mother had hidden inside. Beneath the paper lay a single, coiled strand of chestnut hair—my mother’s hair, preserved against the velvet lining for decades.
"The secondary trust requires a maternal DNA cross-match against the primary heir," Marcus explained, stepping toward a sleek, portable sequencer. "Eleanor told the world your mother was an adopted stray with no claim. If this matches your blood, the trust instantly recognizes your mother as Richard's sole legitimate daughter."

I extended my index finger. Marcus pricked the skin, pressing a bead of crimson blood onto the glass slide, then placed the strand of my mother's hair beside it into the machine’s intake slot.
The machine hummed, its digital display scrolling through thousands of base pairs.

A sharp, green chime broke the silence.
*MATCH CONFIRMED: 99.98% MATERNAL-FILIAL CORRELATION. LINEAGE: RICHARD AND EVELYN BLACKWOOD.*
On the desk, an automated printer whirred to life, producing an embossed, gold-stamped certificate of primary accession.
"Sign it, Clara," Evelyn whispered, her hand resting on my trembling shoulder. "Sign it and strip Eleanor of everything she stole from us."
I took the fountain pen. My hand hovered over the heavy vellum parchment. The name on the line read: *Clara Blackwood-Vance, Sovereign Beneficiary.*

I pressed the nib to the paper. The black ink flowed smoothly across the page, sealing the legal death of Eleanor’s empire.
Before the ink could even dry, the library doors flew off their hinges.
