Chapter 4 - Shards on the Dance Floor

The word *police* hit the room like a concussive blast.
Martha’s face went from pale to an unnatural, chalky gray. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow jerks. She looked at Evelyn, then at Eleanor, and finally at Nick, who stood rigid, watching her with a total lack of pity.
"You... you set me up," Martha hissed, her voice trembling with venomous rage. "All of you. Nick... how could you do this to your own mother? On your wedding day?!"
"You brought this on yourself, Mom," Nick replied, his voice heavy with finality. "I tried to be patient. When you insulted Clara’s family, I asked you to stop. When you refused to attend our engagement dinner, I let it slide. When you tried to cancel our caterer last week behind our backs, I absorbed the cost and kept quiet. But when you laid your hands on my wife... when you deliberately humiliated her in front of everyone we love... you stopped being my mother."
"She’s a nobody!" Martha screeched, completely unhinged now, kicking off her designer heels and stomping on the floor like a furious toddler. "She grew up in a cramped three-bedroom bungalow! Her father was a failed carpenter! She doesn't have a drop of pedigree! I built this life! I protected your status! And you're throwing it all away for a girl whose hair I cut off like sheep's wool!"
Before anyone could stop her, Martha lunged forward.
Her manicured hands, tipped with sharp acrylic nails, aimed directly at my face. She was shrieking, incoherent curses spilling from her mouth, driven by the absolute madness of total exposure.
"You ruined my life!" she screamed.
I braced for impact, but Nick reacted instantly. He stepped in front of me, catching Martha by both wrists with firm, unyielding strength.
"Don't you ever touch her again," Nick commanded, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone.
"Let go of me! Nick! Let me go!"
Two uniformed officers, followed by the venue manager, pushed through the heavy doors and marched briskly down the central aisle. The polished badges on their chests glinted under the chandeliers. The guests parted like the Red Sea, pulling back their silk dresses and tuxedos to avoid being anywhere near the path of the officers.
"Mrs. Martha Montgomery?" the lead officer asked, stepping onto the dance floor.
"Get them away from me!" Martha shrieked, thrashing against Nick's grip until the officers took over, firmly securing her arms behind her back. "Do you know who I am?! I am the head of the Montgomery Charity Gala! I am on the board of the Symphony! You cannot touch me! Nicholas, tell them! Tell them to unhand me!"
"Mrs. Montgomery, you are being detained pursuant to an outstanding warrant for grand larceny, interstate financial fraud, and elder abuse," the officer recited calmly, clicking the steel cuffs around her wrists with a sharp, undeniable *snap*.
The sound of the handcuffs locking was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard in my entire life.
Martha began to sob—not out of remorse, but out of sheer, humiliated rage. Mascara streaked down her cheeks, ruining the flawless foundation she had spent three hours having applied that morning. As the officers turned her toward the exit, her gaze caught mine one last time.
"I will destroy you, Clara," she spat, her teeth bared like a cornered animal. "You think you've won? You think this family will accept you? You haven't seen the last of me!"
"Get her out of here," Eleanor commanded, her walking stick striking the floor with absolute finality.

The officers marched Martha down the aisle. Her shrill protests echoed down the marble hallway outside until the double doors swung shut, cutting off the noise and leaving the ballroom in a state of stunned, paralyzed silence.
I stood there, surrounded by fallen white rose petals, the metallic gleam of the scissors on the floor, and the thick, floral-scented braid of my hair lying motionless by my feet.
