Chapter 24 - Black Water Reckoning

Five miles out, the gunfire faded into the rhythmic, deafening chop of freezing waves slamming against the hull. The fog was absolute—a gray, suffocating shroud that hid sky and water alike.

Nicholas pulled me upright, brushing the shattered glass from my hair. His fingers were trembling, though his face remained a mask of iron control. "Are you hit? Clara, look at me. Are you bleeding?"

"I'm fine," I gasped, though my body shook violently from adrenaline and the damp chill. I looked down at the hem of my gown, completely blackened by soot and lake water. "Nicholas... what is happening? Who is she? Why did she have a gun on my father?"

Across the narrow cabin, my father sat slumped against the navigation console, his hand pressed tightly against his side. Dark, sticky blood was seeping between his fingers.

"Arthur," Julianne said without looking back from the radar screen. "The safe under the helm. Unlock it. Put the drive inside."

"You haven't changed," my father wheezed, his breath rattling in his chest. "Still cold. Still Eleanor's favorite prodigy."

"Don't you dare compare me to that butcher," Julianne hissed, spinning around. For the first time, her composure cracked, exposing raw, venomous fury. "Eleanor took everything from me! She took my name, she took my family’s shares, and then she tried to take my life!"

"And what did you do?" I shouted, unable to hold back the screaming storm inside my chest. I pushed away from Nicholas, standing on shaking legs in the center of the rocking boat. "You let me grow up thinking you were dead! I spent twenty-four years crying over an empty grave in Oakridge Cemetery! And you were alive? Working with Nicholas? Plotting this?"

Julianne looked at me. For a second, a flicker of pain crossed her features, but she buried it beneath a wall of stone.

"You were safe in the dark, Clara," Julianne whispered. "You had a quiet life until Arthur brought you back into Eleanor's crosshairs."

"Arthur didn't bring her back!" Nicholas snapped, stepping between Julianne and me. "Eleanor hunted her down herself. The moment Clara and I met, Eleanor had already flagged her DNA through the state registry. Eleanor knew who Clara was before I did."

A suffocating silence descended upon the cabin, broken only by the rhythmic thrum of the boat's engines.

My father raised his head, his face ghostly pale. "Eleanor didn't just want you dead, Clara," he whispered, his voice trembling. "She wanted you broken. That’s why she let Nicholas marry you. That’s why she cut your hair in front of three hundred witnesses."

"Why?" I choked out, tears finally spilling down my soot-stained cheeks. "Why the hair? Why humiliate me like that?"

My father closed his eyes in shame. "Because of what your mother hid in your cradle."
