Chapter 68 - The Ambush in the Rime

The recording cut abruptly to black.
Before the terminal could cycle down, a thunderous crash rattled the entire concrete foundation of the tower.
Down in the submerged canal, the water exploded with the roar of twin high-performance outboards.
"They're inside," Nicholas said, instantly stepping away from the terminal and raising his sidearm, racking the slide with a clean, metallic snap. "They breached the ice gate."
"How many?" Sarah asked, shrinking against the heavy steel desk of the console.
"Two tactical squads, minimum," Nicholas replied, his eyes scanning the narrow concrete stairwell leading down to the bay. "They won't use heavy ordnance—they want Clara alive and intact. That gives us a narrow margin, but we're cornered."
"No," I said, staring at the terminal screen where a cascade of raw hexadecimal code was now scrolling rapidly. "We're not cornered."
"Clara, what did she mean by 'kill-switch'?" Nicholas asked, glancing back at me.
"The filament," I said, looking down at my wrist. The violet light was no longer glowing faintly. It was pulsing with a violent, erratic strobe, feeding directly off the data flowing through the terminal. "It’s not just a transceiver. When Elena cut the physical tether twelve years ago, she didn't just disable Arthur's override. She inverted the protocol."
I looked at the heavy power cables running from the terminal into the station's massive Cold War transmitter array—the towering bank of high-frequency radio tubes that had once broadcast naval coordinates across the entire northern hemisphere.
"Arthur’s entire drone fleet, the interceptors, the cradle at Calumet... they all run on the Vance neural network," I said, the knowledge rising from the depths of my synthetic memories with terrifying clarity. "They are all linked to the same frequency."
Bootsteps echoed up the concrete stairwell. Heavy, synchronized, tactical boots crunching on broken glass and frozen gravel.
A voice shouted from the landing below—harsh, amplified by a bullhorn:
*"Subject 0-Alpha! Step out onto the catwalk with your hands visible! Any resistance will result in the immediate neuro-suppression of Assets Nicholas and Sarah!"*
Nicholas stepped into the doorway, leveled his weapon, and fired two precise rounds down the stairwell.

A sharp cry of pain followed, accompanied by the deafening rattle of suppressed submachine gun fire chewing the concrete doorframe into clouds of white dust.
"Clara, whatever you're going to do, do it now!" Nicholas yelled, swapping magazines as concrete chips rained down on his shoulders.
