Chapter 8 - The Serpent Bites Back

The cold rain of late autumn hammered mercilessly against the rusted corrugated roof of an abandoned boat repair shed on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Julian Sterling stood near the open loading bay, watching the dark, churning waters of the East River. A private offshore luxury yacht was scheduled to arrive at midnight to carry him and Victoria to an extradition-free haven in South America. But time was slipping away like sand through clenched fists.

Behind him, Victoria sat on an overturned wooden crate, her designer coat soaked, her luxury makeup ruined by the storm. She was shivering uncontrollably, clutching her leather handbag to her chest.

"Where is the boat, Julian?!" she hissed through chattering teeth. "The coast guard has already shut down the northern shipping lanes! If we don't leave before the morning patrols, Liam’s men will find us!"

"Be quiet, Victoria," Julian barked, his jaw tight as he continuously checked his encrypted phone. "The captain had to take an indirect route to avoid the maritime blockades Marcus’s private contractors set up outside the harbor. We leave in twenty minutes."

Suddenly, the rusted side door was kicked open.

Both of them jumped, Julian drawing a silenced semi-automatic pistol from his coat with lethal precision.

Stumbling through the door, soaked to the bone, barefoot and covered in grime, was Caleb. He looked like a rabid dog, his ribs clutching, his eyes bulging with a terrifying mixture of madness and exhaustion.

"Father..." Caleb croaked, falling to his knees on the oil-stained concrete.

Julian didn't lower the gun. "How did you find this place?"

"I tracked Victoria’s phone..." Caleb panted, dragging himself across the floor. "You left me! You left me to be arrested by the feds! I had to hide in a sanitation truck to get past the roadblocks!"

"You should have let them take you," Julian said without an ounce of warmth, his voice completely devoid of paternal love. "At least in federal custody, Eleanor might have let you rot in a cell. Now, you're just baggage."

"I did everything you told me to do!" Caleb screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "I spent four years sleeping beside that woman! I smiled at her sickening father! I endured their condescending looks! I poisoned her with my own hands for you!"

"And yet, she breathes," Victoria sneered from her crate, looking at her half-brother with unmasked revulsion. "You failed, Caleb. You failed to secure the envelope, you failed to kill the baby, and you failed to keep your mouth shut. You're a liability."

Caleb stared at Victoria, something inside his broken psyche finally snapping entirely. All the grooming, all the false promises of an empire, all the years of playing the obedient pawn evaporated into a furnace of pure, murderous rage.

"A liability?" Caleb whispered, a demented grin spreading across his bruised face. "You think I’m the liability, little sister?"

Before Julian could react, Caleb lunged forward, not at his father, but at Victoria. He tackled her off the crate, smashing her head against the concrete. Victoria shrieked in terror as Caleb’s hands wrapped around her throat, choking the breath from her lungs.

"You took my life!" Caleb roared. "You took my name! You don't get to run away to the sun while I burn!"

*BANG!*

A gunshot echoed deafeningly inside the metal shed.

Caleb gasped, stiffening instantly. He looked down at his left shoulder, where a crimson flower bloomed through his torn shirt.

Julian stood over him, the smoking barrel of his pistol pointed directly between Caleb's eyes.

"Get off her," Julian whispered, cold as a reptile. "The only reason you aren't bleeding out through your forehead right now is that I need someone to distract the federal convoy outside the gates when the boat docks. Move, or the next round goes between your teeth."

Caleb rolled off Victoria, clutching his bleeding shoulder, whimpering in agony as Victoria scrambled behind Julian, clutching her bruised neck, coughing violently.

"He's insane, Julian! Shoot him!" Victoria cried.

"No," Julian said coldly, keeping his gun trained on his broken son. "He stays right there. When the coast guard sweeps the dock, we leave him behind as bait."

In the dark corner of the shed, lying half-submerged in a puddle of oily water, Victoria’s designer handbag had spilled open during the struggle. Among the cosmetics and cash lay a small, black burner phone, its screen softly glowing in the shadows.

On the screen was an open call, connected for the last eight minutes.

Thirty miles away, in the Bedford command bunker, Liam Vance took off his tactical headset, looking across the room to where I sat, watching the satellite feed of the Brooklyn waterfront.

"We have their exact coordinates, Eleanor," Liam said softly. "Julian, Victoria, and Caleb. All three in one cage."

I closed my eyes for a single heartbeat, feeling the kick of my daughter inside my belly, fierce and alive.

When I opened my eyes, all mercy was gone.

"Deploy the strike team, Liam," I said, my voice cutting through the hum of the computers like a scythe. "And tell them to leave Caleb breathing. I want to look him in the eyes when the sun comes up."
