Chapter 7 - The Freezing of the Empire

By sunrise the following morning, the financial world woke up to a seismic cataclysm.
The ticker tape on CNBC, Bloomberg, and Wall Street Journal ran in solid, screaming red. *VANCE EMPIRE BOARD PURGES CEO CALEB THORNE. FEDERAL AUTHORITIES ISSUE RED NOTICE FOR JULIAN STERLING. SIXTY BILLION DOLLARS IN ASSETS REVERT TO SOLE HEIRESS ELEANOR VANCE.*
Caleb awoke on the floor of the penthouse, his head throbbing with concussive agony, his mouth tasting of dried copper. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, blinding him.
He staggered to his feet, holding his fractured ribs, stumbling toward the elevator. He needed to get to his private safe at the bank. He needed cash, fake passports, anything to get across the Canadian border.
He pressed the call button for the elevator. Nothing happened. The digital panel displayed a single message in bold white font: **ACCESS DENIED - BIOMETRICS REVOKED.**
"Damn it!" Caleb roared, kicking the steel door.
Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the penthouse burst inward. Six uniformed officers from the NYPD’s Major Commercial Fraud Task Force filed into the room, followed by federal marshals in windbreakers, sidearms holstered but ready.
"Caleb Thorne?" the lead marshal announced, stepping over the broken glass.
"Get out of my house!" Caleb screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Do you know who I am?! I am the acting CEO of Vance International! My attorneys will have your badges by lunch!"
"You're not the CEO of anything, Mr. Thorne," the marshal replied with utter indifference, pulling a thick stack of federal seizure warrants from a manila folder. "As of four a.m. this morning, by order of the United States District Court and the Vance Trust Board of Trustees, this property, along with all associated residential and commercial holdings, has been reclaimed by the sole owner, Mrs. Eleanor Vance."
"She's dead!" Caleb shrieked, saliva flying from his lips. "She's in a hospital morgue! You can't execute orders from a corpse!"
"I assure you, Mr. Thorne," a smooth, cultured voice spoke from the hallway. Harlan stepped into the penthouse, flanked by two armed guards. He looked at Caleb not with anger, but with absolute, cold disdain—the way a gentleman looks at a cockroach scurrying across a fine rug. "Eleanor is very much alive. Her health is immaculate. And her child is thriving."
Caleb stumbled backward, collapsing onto the arm of the velvet sofa, his face draining of every drop of color until he resembled a ghost. "Alive...? No... Victoria gave her the tea... she drank it every day..."
"Marcus Vance taught his daughter many things, boy," Harlan said, stepping forward until he stood towering over the pathetic, shivering man. "Chief among them was how to survive men who mistake their own greed for brilliance. You are being evicted, Mr. Thorne. You have sixty seconds to vacate this property before you are removed by force for criminal trespassing."
"My clothes! My watches! My money!" Caleb yelled, scrambling toward the master bedroom.
Two marshals immediately grabbed his arms, twisting them behind his back and forcing him down to his knees with practiced efficiency.
"Everything inside this residence was purchased with Marcus Vance’s capital," Harlan stated coldly. "You brought nothing into this family, Caleb, and you will leave with nothing. Even the suit on your back belongs to the Vance estate."
"Harlan! Harlan, please! We were family!" Caleb wept, real, pathetic tears of desperation cutting lines through the dried blood on his cheeks. "Tell Eleanor I'm sorry! Julian forced me into this! Julian threatened my life! Tell her I love her... tell her I love our baby!"
Harlan stopped at the doorway, turning his head just enough to cast a final glance back at the sniveling coward on the floor.
"She has already left a message for you, Caleb," Harlan said softly.
"What message?!" Caleb begged, straining against the marshals' grip.
Harlan pulled a small recording device from his pocket, pressed play, and held it up.
My voice filled the silent, ruined penthouse, cold as glacial ice, vibrating with absolute authority:
May you like
*“Run, Caleb. Run as far and as fast as your stolen legs can carry you. Because every door you knock on will be closed, every friend you call will hang up, and every shadow you see in the dark will belong to me.”*
