Chapter 5 - Caleb's Final Gamble

Back at the Vance Tower penthouse, Caleb paced across the Italian marble floor, nursing a glass of twenty-year-old single malt scotch. His tailored suit was wrinkled, his silk tie loosened at the collar. On the coffee table lay three burner phones, all silent.

Across the room, sitting on the velvet sofa with her long legs crossed, Victoria tapped her manicured nails impatiently against her iPad. The smug arrogance that had defined her at the funeral had begun to sour into a brittle, nervous dread.

"Why hasn't the hospital called?" Victoria demanded, her voice grating on Caleb's fraying nerves. "Dr. Evans was supposed to confirm she arrived in cardiac arrest forty minutes ago! Caleb, if she didn't take the ambulance, where is she?"

"Shut up, Victoria!" Caleb snapped, slamming his crystal tumbler onto the glass table, cracking the rim. "She collapsed in the boardroom! You saw her! She couldn't even stand! Harlan is an eighty-year-old paper-pusher; he has no power outside of Marcus's legal trusts. She’s probably dying in the back of some municipal paramedic van right now."

"Then why did my offshore wire transfer bounce?" Victoria hissed, standing up and thrusting the tablet into his face. "Look at this! My private accounts in the Caymans—frozen! The Vance trust funds—inaccessible! The notification says 'Flagged for High-Level Fraud by Corporate Intelligence'!"

Caleb snatched the tablet, his blood running cold as he scrolled through the red warning banners flashing across the screen. Every credit line, every corporate jet privilege, every auxiliary account he had siphoned from over the last three years had been locked down with military-grade encryption.

Suddenly, the penthouse doors swung open with a resounding thud.

Julian Sterling, Marcus Vance’s fiercest rival and the shadow financier who had secretly backed Caleb’s coup, stepped into the foyer. But Julian wasn't smiling. Flanking him were four stone-faced bodyguards.

"Julian!" Caleb breathed, relief washing over his face for a split second. "Thank God you're here. We had a minor hiccup with the board, but the power of attorney—"

Julian didn't let him finish. In a blur of motion, Julian’s right hand struck Caleb across the face with brutal, backhanded force.

Caleb crashed into the glass table, shattering it completely, crying out as shards pierced his palms.

"You incompetent idiot," Julian said smoothly, dusting off his cashmere lapel. "You told me Marcus had grown soft in his old age. You told me the girl was a spoiled, sheltered heiress who spent her days painting nurseries and arranging flowers."

"She is!" Caleb coughed, spitting blood onto the rug as he struggled to sit up. "She's pregnant, she’s weak, she was completely reliant on me!"

"Then explain to me," Julian leaned down, grabbing Caleb by his hair and yanking his head back, "why the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice, and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network just launched a simultaneous raid on my corporate headquarters fifteen minutes ago?"

Victoria gasped, backing away toward the terrace doors. "What?"

"Marcus Vance never kept his real ledgers in the company servers," Julian snarled, his voice vibrating with suppressed terror. "He kept them in an offline dark vault. And the moment that girl swiped her biometric token in the boardroom, every single transaction Caleb ever made—every bribe, every kickback, every shell company I used to launder money into his pockets—was broadcast directly to the Attorney General’s desk."

Julian shoved Caleb’s head into the shattered glass. "The Vance girl isn't dying, Caleb. She just laid siege to the entire financial district. And my name is on the top of her target list."

"No... no, that's impossible," Caleb stammered, his eyes wide with unhinged terror. "The poison... she took enough to kill a horse... she can't be functioning!"

"You're a dead man walking, Caleb," Julian said, straightening up and signaling his guards. "And if you think I'm going to prison for your sloppy, amateur assassination attempt, you're mistaken. We're cutting our losses."

"Julian, wait! Please!" Victoria pleaded, running forward. "I have the security codes to Marcus’s private estate! There's sixty million in bearer bonds in the vault under the library! Take me with you!"

Caleb stared at his mistress in utter disbelief. "Victoria? What are you doing?!"

Victoria didn't even look at him. Her eyes were fixed on Julian, pure, predatory survival shining in her gaze. "He's useless, Julian. He couldn't even kill a pregnant woman properly. Take me with you, and the sixty million is yours."

Julian looked at Victoria, a cold, mocking smile touching his lips. "Pack light, darling. We leave in ten minutes."

May you like

Before Caleb could scream, Julian’s guards delivered two heavy kicks to his ribs, leaving him gasping on the floor in a pool of his own blood and cheap whiskey, entirely abandoned by the woman he had traded his wife for.
