Chapter 10 - The Public Unmasking

"Eleanor! Eleanor, my God, you're alive!" Caleb wept, trying to crawl forward, reaching out a trembling, bloody hand toward the hem of my coat. "They made me do it! Julian... Julian held a gun to my head! He threatened to kill me if I didn't marry you! He told me he would butcher you if I didn't give you the tea!"
Julian looked over at Caleb, laughing through his broken teeth, a cold, mocking sound that cut through the rain. "You truly are a pathetic worm, Caleb. Even in defeat, you grovel like a dog."
"Shut up!" Caleb screamed at his father, his eyes rolling wildly. "Eleanor, look at me! Look at your husband! I love you! I swear on my mother’s soul, I love you! I threw away the full dose! That’s why you survived! I diluted it because I couldn't bear to hurt our child!"
"Don't flatter yourself, Caleb," Dr. Cross’s icy voice cut in as she stepped beside me, holding up a digital tablet displaying the chemical analysis of my blood. "You didn't dilute anything. You tripled the peptide concentration over the last forty-eight hours. If Eleanor hadn't reached our surgical unit within thirty minutes, her uterus would have ruptured, and both she and the infant would have suffered complete hemorrhagic shock."
The lie died in Caleb’s throat. His mouth hung open, trembling, trapped beneath the undeniable weight of scientific truth.
I crouched down slightly, supporting my belly with one hand, until my eyes were level with his. The smell of cheap alcohol, copper, and raw fear rolled off him in waves.
"Do you remember what you whispered to me beside my father’s coffin, Caleb?" I asked softly, my voice devoid of any warmth, any remnant of the affection I had once carried for him.
Caleb swallowed hard, tears mingling with the cold rain streaming down his cheeks. He couldn't speak.
"'Your father is dead. You’re worthless now. I’m taking everything,'" I repeated his words, watching as each syllable struck him like a whip. "You thought my father was just an old man with a checkbook. You forgot who Marcus Vance was. He built this city. He mapped every sewer, every dock, every offshore account, and every dirty secret men like Julian Sterling tried to bury."
I straightened up, turning my back on him.
"Harlan," I said.
"Yes, Eleanor?"
"The national press conference at Vance Tower. Is the satellite uplink ready?"
"Every major network in the country has been linked to the broadcast feed for the last ten minutes," Harlan replied, holding up his phone. "The Department of Justice, the FBI, and three hundred thousand live viewers are waiting for your statement."
I nodded to Liam. Liam stepped forward, pulling a heavy canvas bag from his tactical rig. He dumped its contents onto the wooden pier between Julian and Caleb.
Dozens of encrypted hard drives, synthetic peptide vials bearing the Sterling Pharmaceuticals logo, and Marcus Vance’s master ledger of Julian's thirty-year money laundering ring tumbled out onto the wet planks.
"Broadcast this live," I instructed the communications team. "Show the world the face of the Sterling family. Show them the father who sold weapons to cartels, the daughter who acted as an undercover spy, and the coward who tried to poison his pregnant wife to steal her father's empire."
"Eleanor, no! Please!" Victoria screamed, thrashing against the operators holding her down. "My career! My life! You can't put my face on the national news! Julian, do something!"
"Julian can't do anything," I said coldly, walking past them toward the waiting armored SUV. "Julian is facing six consecutive life sentences in a federal supermax facility. And you, Victoria, will spend the rest of your youth behind the concrete walls of a maximum-security penitentiary for conspiracy to commit premeditated murder."
"And what about me?!" Caleb wailed, pulling himself up onto his knees, his bloody hands clutching the air. "Eleanor! What about me?! I'm your husband! The law protects spousal communication! You can't testify against me!"
I paused at the door of the SUV, looking back over my shoulder.
"The black envelope my father left me, Caleb... it wasn't just a will," I said, a faint, devastating smile touching my lips. "It contained an expedited decree of marital annulment signed by the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, pre-dated and sealed under emergency corporate protection statutes due to documented spousal treason."
Caleb gasped, the final realization crashing into him like a freight train.
"You were never my husband, Caleb," I whispered. "You were just a pest in my father's house. And the exterminators have arrived."
Liam shoved Caleb’s face down into the wet deck as sirens began to wail in the distance—dozens of federal cruisers racing down the access road to complete the formal arrests.
As the heavy armored door of the SUV sealed shut behind me, cutting off their screams and the wailing sirens, I sank back into the leather seat.
A sharp, sudden tightness seized my lower abdomen.
I gasped, my hands flying to the bottom of my belly.
"Eleanor?" Dr. Cross said instantly, her eyes widening as she grabbed the mobile monitor. "What is it?"
May you like
"A contraction..." I breathed, the pain rolling through me with intense, rhythmic force. "A real one."
