Chapter 11 - A Beast in a Corner

The pain was entirely different from the synthetic poison. It wasn't the jagged, toxic burning of a chemical tearing through my tissue; it was the ancient, unstoppable rhythm of childbirth.

"Cervix is dilating fast," Dr. Cross reported, her hands moving with clinical speed as she monitored the telemetry. "The stress of the last twelve hours has triggered active labor. We need to get her to the secure medical bay at the safe house immediately."

"Driver, move!" Harlan barked, the SUV’s powerful engine roaring to life as we pulled away from the chaotic scene at the pier, escorted by two tactical vehicles with flashing red and blue lights.

Outside, the storm had reached its peak. Gale-force winds battered the heavy vehicle, rain coming down in blinding sheets. The city skyline was a distant, blurred cluster of gray shadows across the bay.

"Breathe, Eleanor," Harlan said gently, turning in his seat to take my hand. "Marcus would be so proud of you today. You defended his legacy. You protected your daughter. The hard part is over."

"It's not over until we reach the safe house, Harlan," I grunted through clenched teeth, riding the peak of a two-minute contraction, my fingernails sinking into the leather armrest. "Where is Liam?"

"Liam stayed behind to oversee the federal transfer of Julian and Victoria," Harlan replied. "He’s five minutes behind us with the secondary convoy."

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite radio on the dashboard let out a sharp, continuous distress tone.

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

Harlan tapped the screen. "Liam, what's your status?"

Static hissed across the speaker, followed by the frantic sound of gunfire and screaming engines.

*"Convoy ambushed!"* Liam’s voice roared through the static, barely audible over the sound of metal tearing and explosions. *"Julian’s private mercenary cell... they weren't on the boat! They staged a diversion at the junction! They hit the transport van!"*

My blood turned to ice. "Julian escaped?!"

*"Negative! Julian is dead—took a round to the chest during the firefight! But Caleb... Caleb broke loose during the breach! He stole a transport SUV! He’s tracking your vehicle’s transponder! Turn off the main highway, now—!"*

The radio cut out in a violent burst of static.

"Turn off the transponder!" Harlan shouted to the driver.

"I’m trying, sir! The system has been overridden externally from the master fleet console!" the driver yelled back, wrestling with the steering wheel as the heavy SUV hydroplaned across the slick tarmac of the industrial bypass.

Before anyone could react, a massive, sickening crunch shattered the rear of our vehicle.

Our three-ton armored SUV was violently shoved from behind, the impact throwing me forward against the safety harness, knocking the breath from my lungs with a sharp gasp. Dr. Cross caught my head just before it could strike the window pillar.

"He's behind us!" the driver screamed, looking into the rearview mirror.

Through the rain-streaked rear camera feed on the dashboard, I saw a black armored transport truck, its front grille reinforced with heavy steel push-bars. Behind the cracked, rain-lashed windshield sat Caleb.

His face was covered in blood, his eyes bulging with total, psychotic madness. He was bleeding from his shoulder, his teeth bared in an animalistic snarl, slamming his foot down on the accelerator again and again.

*CRUNCH!*

Another massive hit sent our SUV spinning across the rain-slicked four-lane highway. The driver fought the wheel with all his strength, but the sheer momentum of the truck behind us forced our vehicle off the road, crashing through the chain-link perimeter fence of an abandoned Vance Logistics freight terminal.

Our SUV slammed into the concrete loading dock of Warehouse 4, coming to a dead, shuddering halt amidst a cloud of hissing radiator steam and deploying airbags.

Dr. Cross coughed through the white smoke, immediately checking my pulse. "Eleanor! Can you hear me?!"

"I'm here..." I groaned, a massive contraction ripping through my abdomen, so violent that my entire body seized. "My water... it just broke."

"Oh, God," Cross whispered, her hands finding the warm, wet pool soaking through my trousers. "The baby is coming. Now."

May you like

Outside the ruined vehicle, the heavy crunch of boots on wet gravel echoed through the empty loading bay.
