Chapter 70 - The Golden Afternoon

The storm passed as quickly as it had arrived, leaving behind a washed, crystalline world where every leaf dripped with sparkling diamond droplets and the air smelled intensely of wet pine and ozone.

The following afternoon broke with a brilliant, golden sun that warmed the damp earth and drew a thick, white mist up from the valley floor. It was the kind of perfect, suspended afternoon where time seemed to slow down entirely, stretching the hours into endless vistas of peace.

I sat on the front porch with a whetstone and my pocketknife, slowly running the steel blade across the coarse stone in a rhythmic, meditative scrape.

Clara came out of the house carrying a basket of freshly washed laundry to hang on the clothesline strung between the porch post and the old oak tree. The clean scent of sun-dried cotton drifted on the gentle breeze.

As she pinned a white sheet to the line, she paused, looking out across the sprawling green fields that rolled away toward the distant eastern ridge. The valley was quiet, peaceful, and entirely untouched by the violence of the world beyond our borders.

She walked back to the porch, wiping her hands on her apron, and sat down on the top step beside my chair.

"Penny for your thoughts," I murmured, lowering the knife.

"I was just thinking about how fast the year has gone," she said softly, resting her chin on her knees. "It feels like just yesterday we drove down that gravel lane with two suitcases and a prayer."

"And now look at us," I smiled, gesturing with the knife toward the garden, the repaired barn, and the smoke lazily curling from the kitchen chimney where Jean was already prepping dinner. "We’re practically local institutions."

She laughed, a bright, melodic sound that chased away the last shadows of memory. She reached over, taking my hand and stopping the whetstone from moving.

"Thank you," she said, her voice dropping into a quiet, intense sincerity. "For keeping us safe. For building this."

"We built it together, Clara," I replied, wrapping my free arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. "Every single board, every single day."
