Chapter 35 - The Autumn of Reflection

September brought the crisp, invigorating air of autumn once more, painting the city parks in brilliant shades of amber, copper, and crimson.

Lauren’s internship at the arboretum had successfully transitioned into a permanent part-time botanical research position, running concurrently with her final year of undergraduate studies. She was thriving in her element, often coming over to our apartment with exciting stories about rare plant propagation, soil microbes, and greenhouse ecosystems.

One Saturday evening in mid-October, Lauren, Emma, and I sat around our laminate dining table eating homemade vegetable soup and crusty French bread. Grandma Jean was resting at home, but she had sent over a container of spiced apple compote.

"I got my course schedule for the spring semester today," Lauren announced, taking a sip of water. "In addition to plant physiology, I'm taking a community outreach class on urban green spaces."

"That sounds right up your alley," I smiled.

"It is," Lauren nodded. "I want to help design neighborhood pocket parks and community gardens in under-resourced areas. People need access to nature just as much as they need housing and education. It heals something inside you."

Listening to her talk with such genuine purpose and clarity, I thought back to the woman who had once sat on my sofa shivering in ruined designer clothes, terrified that her life was over because she had lost her money and her status. She hadn't just survived the collapse of the Vance empire; she had completely reinvented her soul.
