Chapter 40 - The Summer Solstice Celebration

The summer solstice brought the longest day of the year, bathing the city in golden sunlight that lingered well past nine o'clock in the evening. To celebrate both the solstice and the official beginning of Lauren’s career as a full-time environmental planner with the city’s green space initiative, we organized an outdoor dinner on the spacious rooftop patio of a community center downtown.

It was a warm, balmy evening. The rooftop was decorated with twinkling fairy lights strung across wooden trellises, and potted herbs and flowering vines filled the air with a fresh, earthy scent.

We had invited a handful of close friends—including Sarah Miller and some of Lauren’s colleagues from the arboretum and non-profit sector.

As the sun dipped toward the western horizon, casting long, amber shadows across the city skyline, Lauren stood up to raise a toast.

"I want to thank everyone here," Lauren began, her voice steady and warm as she looked around the circle of familiar, loving faces. "A few years ago, I thought my life was defined by the walls of a mansion and the approval of people who only loved me conditionally. I was terrified of being ordinary, terrified of failing, and terrified of the truth."

She turned her gaze toward me and Emma, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears of gratitude. "Clara opened her door to a stranger in the middle of a storm. She didn't judge me for my ruined clothes or my broken pride. She gave me a cup of tea, a safe place to rest, and a chance to figure out who I actually was. And because of that, I finally understand what true wealth is. It’s not in a bank account. It’s right here, around this table."

We raised our glasses together, the crystal chinking softly in the warm summer air as the first stars flickered to life in the deepening indigo sky above the city.
