Chapter 6 - The Legacy Announcement

Dinner was served in the main dining hall at long banquet tables adorned with white lilies and tall silver candelabras. As the dessert plates were cleared, Richard tapped a silver spoon against his crystal glass, the sharp chime commanding instant silence across the room.

"Friends, family, and distinguished guests," Richard began, stepping up to a podium near the head table. His voice had the smooth, practiced resonance of a seasoned politician. "Tonight, we honor forty years of love, devotion, and family values embodied by Robert and Eleanor Vance."

A round of enthusiastic applause rippled through the hall. Eleanor dabbed at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, while Robert beamed, puffing his chest out.

"In our family," Richard continued, gesturing toward his wife and children, "we believe that the greatest legacy a man can leave is the foundation he builds for the next generation. My father-in-law has always believed in preparing his bloodline for excellence. And tonight, to mark this incredible milestone, Robert has an announcement to share."

My father stood up, buttoning his tuxedo jacket, and stepped up to the microphone. The room hushed in reverent anticipation.

"Thank you, Richard," Robert said, his deep voice carrying over the sound system. "Looking around this room, I am reminded that a man's worth is measured by the strength of his family. Eleanor and I have worked hard our entire lives, and we want to ensure that our legacy continues through those who carry our vision into the future."

He reached into his breast pocket and produced a crisp white envelope.

"Tonight, in honor of our fortieth anniversary, Eleanor and I are establishing the Vance Family Foundation Trust. An educational endowment of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, divided equally among our grandchildren—Julian, Chloe, and Leo—to fully fund their preparatory and Ivy League educations."

The applause was thunderous. Guests rose to their feet, clinking glasses, nodding in admiration at Robert’s magnanimity. Lauren was beaming, tears streaming down her carefully contoured cheeks as she hugged her children.

I sat motionless, my hands resting flat on the white tablecloth.

One hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Divided among three grandchildren.

Robert had deliberately excluded Emma in front of more than a hundred people. Just as he had four years ago with the three one-thousand-dollar checks, he had drawn a public line in the sand. Lauren’s children were investments; my daughter was an afterthought.

Robert raised his hands to quiet the ovation, his gaze sweeping across the room until it landed directly on our table. A patronizing, self-satisfied smile curled on his lips.

"And of course," Robert added, his voice dripping with condescending charity through the speakers, "we have not forgotten our little Emma. While her path may be somewhat more... modest, Eleanor and I have set aside a five-hundred-dollar savings bond for her trade school fund. Every child deserves a start, no matter how humble their prospects."

A collective murmur rolled through the room. A few guests chuckled uncomfortably, while others shot pitying glances toward our table.
