Chapter 32 - The High School Milestone

June brought the vibrant energy of early summer and a massive milestone for our family: Emma’s transition from middle school to high school.

The orientation ceremony at the local high school was held in the gymnasium on a warm Thursday evening. The room was packed with nervous incoming freshmen and proud parents holding cameras and bouquets of flowers.

When Emma’s name was announced as one of the incoming students selected for the advanced STEM leadership program, Lauren, Grandma Jean, and I stood up and cheered at the top of our lungs. Grandma Jean waved a small homemade banner that read WAY TO GO, EMMA! while Lauren snapped pictures with her phone.

After the ceremony, we celebrated at a local ice cream parlor down the street, sitting at a sticky outdoor picnic table under the warm evening sky.

"High school is going to be a big step up," Emma said thoughtfully, stirring her hot fudge sundae with her spoon. "More demanding classes, bigger science labs, and a lot more responsibility."

"You're more than ready for it, sweetheart," Lauren encouraged her, handing her a napkin. "You've got the curiosity and the discipline to handle whatever they throw at you."

"And if things get tough, you've got a whole fan club backing you up," I added, clinking my ice cream cone against hers.

Sitting there in the soft summer twilight, watching Emma laugh as a dollop of whipped cream landed on her nose, I knew that the foundation we had built together was unbreakable.
