Chapter 45 - The Handcuffs on the Salt Wharf

Mateo De La Vega-Vance made one desperate, pathetic lunge toward the open cab of his flatbed truck[cite: 10].

He never touched the handle[cite: 10].

Two officers of the Maritime Police caught him by the shoulders of his heavy parka, slamming him face-first against the salt-crusted steel of the truck door[cite: 10].

"I am a Spanish citizen!" Mateo screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria as his cheek ground against the cold metal[cite: 10]. "You cannot touch a De La Vega on international water! Call Madrid! Call my family!"[cite: 7, 10]

"Your family is entirely accounted for, Mateo," I said softly, stepping closer to where he lay pinned[cite: 10].

"Your cousin Ignacio is in a cell in Madrid[cite: 7, 10]. Victoria is in irons in Geneva[cite: 7, 10]. And Robert Hayes is sitting in a federal holding unit in North Carolina waiting for his prison bus[cite: 7, 10]."

The heavy stainless-steel ratchets of the transport cuffs snapped shut around Mateo’s wrists with two sharp, definitive clicks that echoed out over the dark water of the estuary[cite: 7, 10].

Captain Santos reached into Mateo’s inner coat pocket, pulling out a sealed leather wallet containing three forged diplomatic passports and an unlisted satellite terminal[cite: 10].

"Iberian Deep-Water Logistics will be placed into immediate judicial liquidation by dawn, Mrs. Overstreet," Captain Santos said, offering me a crisp, formal nod[cite: 10].

"And this entire pier will be secured by the Portuguese Navy until your husband’s trust coordinates the final transfer of the palladium reserves to the American logistics command[cite: 7, 10]."

Mateo twisted his neck around, his eyes bloodshot, his lips pulling back over his teeth in pure, unadulterated venom[cite: 7, 10].

"You think this saves you, Diane?" Mateo hissed, spittle flying from his mouth into the cold wind[cite: 7, 10].

"You think an old woman who cleans grease off a stove can fight forty billion dollars of European private equity?"[cite: 7, 10]

"Your forty billion dollars was built on stolen fuel and forged promissory notes, Mateo," I replied, looking down at him with the calm, immovable stillness of a mountain that had weathered a thousand storms[cite: 7, 10].

"My husband didn't leave me an empire of paper[cite: 5, 7, 10]. He left me the truth[cite: 5, 7, 10]. And every time your family brings a forged line of ink to my doorstep, the truth breaks your hands[cite: 4, 7, 10]."

The officers hauled Mateo to his feet, marching him down the wet concrete toward the waiting patrol van[cite: 7, 10].

His boots dragged through the puddles of salt water, his proud aristocratic head bowed in complete, unrecoverable ruin[cite: 7, 10].

The metal doors slammed shut with a heavy, airtight thud that vibrated through the night air[cite: 7, 10].

The patrol sirens remained silent as the convoy pulled away from the wharf, leaving Pier 14 completely quiet under the stars[cite: 7, 10].

Commander Cruz walked over to where I stood, looking out over the dark river where the tide was beginning to turn[cite: 10].

"The naval cargo is secure, Diane," Cruz smiled gently, resting a gloved hand on my shoulder[cite: 10].

"The sixty tons of palladium will be cataloged by the Defense Logistics Agency tomorrow morning[cite: 10]. Under the 1974 trust codicil, fifty percent of the statutory salvage value—approximately forty-eight million dollars—will be credited directly to the Leonard Vance Overstreet Preservation Trust in Raleigh[cite: 7, 10]."

I looked at the massive steel containers resting safely on the stone[cite: 10].

For thirty years, Derek and Cassandra had believed that having money meant living in rented mansions, leasing European sports cars, and treating working people like disposable servants[cite: 5, 10].

They had never understood that real wealth is the integrity that outlasts the liars[cite: 4, 10].

"Take me back to Óbidos, Evelyn," I said softly, a peaceful, settled warmth spreading through my chest[cite: 10]. "I have a painting to finish[cite: 7, 10]."
