Chapter 39 - The Flight to Cointrin

The United States Navy C-37A transport jet tore down the runway at Figo Maduro military air base outside Lisbon, climbing into the clouds with a concussive roar that pressed us back into our leather seats[cite: 7].
It was four-fifteen on Thursday afternoon.
Outside the reinforced passenger windows, the blue expanse of the Atlantic gave way to the snow-capped jagged peaks of the Pyrenees, glowing like molten rose-gold in the setting European sun[cite: 7].
Inside the pressurized cabin, the air was quiet, smelling of ozone, hot coffee, and high-frequency communication relays[cite: 7].
Commander Evelyn Cruz sat across from me at the four-place executive conference table, her encrypted tablet displaying real-time transponder data from the diplomatic air traffic controllers in Geneva[cite: 7].
Beside her sat Arthur Vance, who had joined us via a secure, lag-free satellite video link from his law office on Fayetteville Street in Raleigh[cite: 7].
Arthur was wearing his old gray courtroom suit, his silver hair uncombed, holding a steaming mug of chicory coffee, looking tired but fiercely, beautifully alive[cite: 7].
"Diane," Arthur’s gravelly voice came through the secure cabin speaker[cite: 7]. "The Swiss Federal Banking Commission has cleared our preliminary appearance on the docket for ten o'clock tomorrow morning[cite: 7]."
"Who is presiding, Arthur?" I asked, leaning over the table[cite: 7].
"Chief Arbitrator Heinrich Von Berg," Arthur answered, tapping a digital document on his desk in North Carolina[cite: 7]. "Eighty-two years old, a former president of the International Court of Justice, and the last surviving jurist who audited the original 1968 logistics treaties in person[cite: 7]."
Arthur leaned into his camera, his eyes burning with absolute, protective resolve[cite: 7].
"Von Berg does not take bribes from Geneva banking syndicates, Diane[cite: 7]. He doesn't care about the De La Vega family's aristocratic connections[cite: 7]. If you produce the physical keys and the original unredacted naval manifests, he will execute a permanent Certificate of Extinguishment that will bar these predators from ever touching American real estate again[cite: 7]."
"And what happens if Victoria tries to block the hearing?" I asked[cite: 7].
"She already tried," Commander Cruz spoke up, rotating her tablet to display an urgent dispatch from the American Embassy in Bern[cite: 7].
"Three hours ago, Victoria’s trust filed a motion in the Cantonal Court of Geneva, claiming that because your husband passed away without a formal Swiss testamentary transfer, the physical keys are classified as ownerless treasure subject to fifty-percent cantonal escheatment," Cruz explained[cite: 7].
A dry, bitter laugh escaped my lips[cite: 7].
"Ownerless treasure," I murmured[cite: 7]. "They really will try any lie when the money runs large[cite: 7]."
"They aren't trying to win an argument, Diane," Arthur warned[cite: 7]. "They are trying to delay the registration until midnight on Friday[cite: 7]. If the keys aren't turned into the master ledger by twelve-zero-zero, the statutory sixty-year window expires automatically, and the default clause executes under Swiss commercial law[cite: 7]."
I looked down at the velvet pouch resting on the polished table before me[cite: 7].
I opened the drawstring, letting the two heavy gold keys catch the pale cabin lights[cite: 7].
Eighteen-karat solid gold, forged fifty-eight years ago by men who had survived world wars, depression, and corporate greed to ensure that their children would never have to bow their heads to borrowed wealth[cite: 7].
"They won't delay this hearing, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping into that quiet, unbreakable register that had dismantled Cassandra’s empire in Charlotte[cite: 7].
"How are the children in Chatham?" I asked softly[cite: 7].
Arthur’s face softened, a genuine, warm smile crinkling the corners of his eyes[cite: 7].
"Derek called me from the farm an hour ago, Diane[cite: 7]," Arthur said[cite: 7]. "He and the kids finished repairing the cedar fence along the north meadow[cite: 7]. He said the cows are out in the clover, and the house is warm[cite: 7]. He asked me to tell you that he checked the deadbolt on the kitchen door[cite: 7]. It's locked tight[cite: 7]."
Tears warmed my eyes, but my chin remained high and steady[cite: 7].
"Tell him to keep the fire going, Arthur," I said[cite: 7]. "I'll be home for Sunday dinner[cite: 7]."
The pilot’s voice crackled over the intercom: Ladies and gentlemen, we have begun our initial descent into Geneva-Cointrin. Current temperature is three degrees Celsius, light snow on the runway.
I zipped the gold keys into my leather travel tote, buttoned my navy wool coat, and took a deep, steady breath[cite: 7].
The ocean was behind us[cite: 7].
The wolves were waiting in the snow[cite: 7].
May you like
And the final ledger was about to be closed[cite: 7].
