Chapter 9 - The ashes of the past

The warmth of the champagne lighting in the grand ballroom felt suddenly suffocating. Sofia stood paralyzed in her spectacular midnight-blue gown, the cold steel of the suppressed weapon digging into her spine. Uncle Elias smiled warmly at passing guests beneath his elegant silver mask, projecting the image of an affectionate relative whispering a secret to his nephew's new companion.
Walk toward the service exit, Sofia, Elias murmured, his voice a terrifying contrast to his genial posture. Slowly. If you make a scene, I will shoot you, and the bullet will pass straight through you and kill the innocent socialite standing in front of us. Move.
Sofia’s enormous hazel eyes darted across the crowded room, desperately searching for Alexander. He was standing near the grand staircase, his broad shoulders shifting as he realized she was no longer in his line of sight.
She took a stiff, terrified step toward the heavy velvet curtains concealing the kitchen exit. She remembered the fire. She remembered the man taking her from her crib. The fear threatened to consume her, but then she remembered Alexander's words. You are Sofia Sterling. The rightful co-heir to this dynasty. She was not a victim anymore.
Sofia deliberately stumbled, her high heel catching the hem of a passing woman’s extravagant gown. The sudden, chaotic tangle of silk and apologies created a momentary, chaotic disruption in the crowd.
Elias lost his grip on her arm for a fraction of a second.
That fraction of a second was all Alexander needed. He had spotted the unnatural tension in Elias's posture. Moving with extraordinary, terrifying athletic power, the billionaire CEO tore through the crowd of wealthy elites like a predator recognizing a threat.
Elias raised his concealed weapon under his jacket to fire at Sofia's back, abandoning stealth for survival.
Alexander crashed into his uncle before the trigger could be pulled.
The impact was violent and cinematic. The two men collided in the center of the ballroom, crashing backward into a towering pyramid of crystal champagne glasses. The deafening crash silenced the orchestra instantly. Guests screamed, scattering in a panicked wave of jewels and silk as the illusion of high society shattered.
Elias scrambled on the marble floor, raising his suppressed pistol toward Alexander’s chest. Alexander, utilizing a brutal, precise disarming technique he had learned from elite private military contractors, kicked the weapon from Elias's hand, sending it skittering across the polished floor. Alexander grabbed his uncle by the lapels of his tuxedo, hauling the traitor to his feet and slamming him brutally against a marble pillar.
Enough! Alexander roared, his piercing gray eyes blazing with absolute, unbridled fury.
The room was dead silent, save for the panicked breathing of the elite guests. Dozens of Alexander’s loyal security personnel flooded the room, securing the perimeter and drawing their weapons on Richard and Victoria Thorne, who stood frozen near the exit.
Alexander did not let go of his uncle. With his free hand, he pulled a remote from his pocket and pressed a single button.
The massive digital screens lining the walls of the ballroom, intended to display charitable donations, suddenly flared to life. The audio recording recovered from the hidden vault boomed through the state-of-the-art sound system. Eleanor Sterling’s terrified, desperate voice echoed through the cavernous room, laying out the undeniable evidence of Richard Thorne and Elias Sterling’s conspiracy to murder her and steal the company's patents.
The wealthy guests, board members, and prominent politicians gasped in collective horror as the confession of treason and murder was broadcasted to the entire world. The evidence was irrefutable. The empire of lies was crumbling in real-time.
Richard Thorne looked around wildly, realizing his dynasty was over. He raised his hands in surrender as security closed in.
But Victoria’s sanity finally snapped under the weight of her utter ruin. The glamorous, arrogant heiress saw the suppressed weapon Elias had dropped resting on the marble floor mere feet away from her. The champagne-gold silk of her dress flashed as she dove for the gun, her icy blue eyes wide with unhinged madness.
She scooped up the weapon, raising it with trembling, manic hands. She did not aim at Alexander. She aimed directly at Sofia, who was standing frozen in her midnight-blue gown near the shattered champagne glasses.
If I can't have this life, neither can the maid! Victoria screamed, her sculpted cheekbones contorted with pure hatred.
Victoria pulled the trigger.

Alexander saw the movement out of the corner of his eye. He didn't think; he reacted with pure, instinctual devotion. He released his uncle and lunged across the open space, throwing his massive, broad-shouldered physique directly in front of his sister.
A single, deafening gunshot echoed through the grand ballroom, followed by a horrifying, collective scream.
