Chapter 5 - The bloodline cipher

The tension inside the Sterling estate was a living, breathing entity. Alexander wasted no time. He contacted a private, highly discreet geneticist who operated outside the traditional medical grid, ensuring the Thorne family could not intercept or manipulate the results. The doctor arrived via a secure underground garage entrance, carrying a sleek, silver briefcase.

Sofia sat nervously on the edge of the leather sofa in Alexander’s sprawling, dark-wood study. Alexander stood by the massive fireplace, his commanding presence a silent anchor in the storm of her anxiety. He wore a simple black Henley shirt that stretched across his powerful chest, watching the doctor carefully swab the inside of Sofia's cheek.

It will take a few hours to run a direct familial match against your DNA profile, Mr. Sterling, the doctor explained, packing away his tools. I brought the portable sequencer. We won't have to wait days.

Thank you, Doctor. Set up in the adjoining library, Alexander instructed.

As the heavy oak doors closed, leaving them alone, Sofia rubbed her arms, feeling suddenly cold despite the roaring fire. What happens if I'm not her? What if I'm just a maid who looks like your mother?

Alexander walked over, crouching down before her so his piercing gray eyes were level with hers. Then you are a maid who saved me from marrying a monster. But I don't believe in coincidences, Sofia. The locket, the forged records, the sheer terror in Victoria's eyes... you are my sister. I feel it in my bones.

While the genetic sequencer hummed in the next room, night fell over Beverly Hills. The estate was locked down tight, but millions of dollars can buy ghosts that slip through the strongest nets.

At 11:00 PM, the power to the west wing abruptly cut out.

The study plunged into darkness, illuminated only by the flickering orange light of the fireplace. Alexander’s combat instincts, honed by years of surviving the cutthroat corporate underworld, flared instantly. He held up a hand, silencing Sofia, and drew a suppressed tactical pistol from a hidden compartment under his desk.

Stay behind me, he whispered, moving toward the door with silent, athletic grace.

The heavy door burst open before he could reach it. A figure clad entirely in black tactical gear rolled into the room, raising a silenced submachine gun. The assassin had bypassed the exterior guards using a specialized grappling hook to scale the balcony.

Alexander moved with terrifying, explosive speed. He dove forward, tackling the assassin before the man could properly aim at Sofia. The two men crashed into a heavy mahogany bookcase, shattering expensive artifacts. The assassin was highly trained, bringing a combat knife down toward Alexander's chest, but the billionaire CEO possessed overwhelming physical strength. He blocked the strike, twisting the assassin's arm until the bone snapped with a sickening crack.

The assassin grunted, dropping the knife, but reached for a secondary weapon at his ankle. Alexander didn't give him the chance. He delivered a brutal, precise strike to the man's temple, rendering him instantly unconscious on the Persian rug.

Sofia stood trembling in the corner, her hands covering her mouth in sheer horror. Alexander rose, his chest heaving, his dark hair disheveled, but unharmed. He quickly kicked the weapons away and knelt beside the unconscious assassin. He pulled back the black tactical sleeve of the man's uniform.

Alexander froze.

What is it? Sofia asked, stepping cautiously into the firelight.

Alexander stared at the man's wrist. Branded into the skin was a specific, intricate tattoo of a black falcon. It was not the crest of the Thorne family.

It’s the insignia of my own private corporate security firm, Alexander whispered, his voice laced with a cold, devastating realization. The betrayal isn't just Victoria. The call came from inside my own house. Someone on my board of directors wants you dead.
