Chapter 1 - The shattered emerald

The grand ivory marble foyer of the Beverly Hills mansion was a masterclass in untouchable wealth and cinematic opulence. A sweeping staircase, framed by intricate black-and-gold iron railings, curved elegantly toward the upper levels, reflecting the warm, champagne lighting cast by glittering crystal chandeliers. The air was thick with the scent of expensive orchids and unspoken tension. Standing beneath the most magnificent of these chandeliers was Victoria. At thirty, the billionaire heiress and fiancée was stunningly beautiful, possessing sharp, sculpted cheekbones and icy blue eyes that viewed the world with innate arrogance. She wore a spectacular champagne-gold off-shoulder silk couture gown that flowed like liquid metal, paired with diamond earrings. But the centerpiece of her vanity was the enormous antique emerald-and-diamond necklace resting heavily against her collarbone. She was ruthless, demanding, and effortlessly luxurious.

Behind her stood Sofia. At twenty-four, the young maid was breathtakingly beautiful, yet her posture radiated a timid, emotional vulnerability. She possessed an angelic brunette face, enormous hazel eyes, soft rosy lips, and glossy dark hair secured in a neat, immaculate low bun. Her elegant black-and-white fitted French-maid uniform, complete with a crisp white collar, marked her as entirely subservient in this palace of glass and gold. Sofia’s trembling fingers reached behind Victoria’s neck, struggling nervously to unclasp the heavy, intricate lock of the enormous emerald necklace.

Victoria sighed, an exaggerated sound of profound impatience. "Hurry up. Alexander will be down any second, and I refuse to keep him waiting because my maid is incompetent."

Sofia’s hands shook harder. The delicate, antique clasp was stiff, refusing to yield to her gentle pressure. Suddenly—a sharp, horrifying snap echoed in the quiet foyer.

The heavy gold chain broke.

In a moment that felt like extreme slow-motion macro cinematography, the necklace slipped from Sofia's hands. Brilliant, flawless green emeralds and sparkling diamonds broke free from their antique settings, scattering across the highly polished ivory marble floor. The priceless gemstones bounced in every direction, catching the champagne light and flashing like tiny, fallen stars.

Sofia gasped, the sound catching painfully in her throat. I'm so sorry!

Victoria whirled around, her champagne-gold gown sweeping the marble. Her icy blue eyes blazed with a sudden, unhinged fury. You stupid little maid!

In a tight, cinematic side close-up, Victoria raised her hand and delivered one sharp, resounding slap across Sofia’s cheek. The impact was swift and degrading. Sofia stumbled backward, her delicate balance compromised, and fell hard onto the cold marble. Frightened and tearful, she scrambled into a low, floor-level position, sitting among the scattered diamonds and emeralds, her hand rising to cover her reddened, stinging cheek.

Before Victoria could unleash another insult, a pair of impeccably polished, expensive black leather shoes stepped into the frame, halting just inches from the scattered gems.

It was Alexander. At thirty-nine, the extraordinarily handsome billionaire CEO possessed a tall, broad-shouldered, and powerfully athletic physique. His thick dark hair and sharp, masculine jaw were set like stone. Piercing gray eyes surveyed the scene with a cold, commanding, and dangerously composed authority. He wore an impeccable all-black Italian three-piece suit, a black silk tie, and a luxury watch that glinted in the light.

He looked down at the weeping maid on the floor, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly, before he slowly raised his eyes toward his fiancée.

Don't touch her again, Alexander commanded, his voice ice-cold and vibrating with a lethal quiet.

Victoria's expression changed instantly. The arrogant fury melted into a manipulative, panicked sweetness. Baby, she destroyed your mother's necklace!

Alexander did not look at Victoria. He knelt gracefully on the marble, his massive shoulders shifting under his tailored suit, and picked up the enormous emerald centerpiece that had broken away from the chain. In an extreme macro close-up, his large thumb traced the back of the golden setting. He pressed a nearly invisible, microscopic catch hidden behind the central emerald.

The gemstone sprang open with a soft click, functioning like a tiny, exquisite antique locket.

Inside the hidden compartment rested a miniature, perfectly preserved photograph of a beautiful young woman with dark hair, smiling as she cradled a newborn baby in a hospital blanket. Alexander froze. The air in his lungs seemed to evaporate. His jaw tightened so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. In a tight insert close-up, the woman's face was unmistakably his late mother—a woman who had died in a tragic fire over two decades ago.

He slowly turned the delicate photograph over with his thumb. Engraved on the back of the silver backing was a single name: SOFIA.

Alexander slowly lifted his head, looking toward the trembling, hazel-eyed maid crying on the floor. He studied her angelic face, the shape of her eyes, the dark hair. Then, he stood up, his towering frame turning back toward Victoria.

Where did you get this? Alexander asked, his voice deceptively flat.

Victoria forced a nervous, fluttering smile, her icy blue eyes darting toward the stairs. Your mother gave it to me. Before she passed, she wanted me to have it as an heirloom for our future.

Alexander slowly closed his fist around the emerald locket, the sharp edges of the diamonds biting into his palm. He took one deliberate step closer to his fiancée, his gray eyes narrowing into storms of pure rage.

My mother died before we met, Alexander stated.

Dead silence fell over the grand foyer. The ambient hum of the mansion seemed to cease entirely. Victoria's artificial smile disappeared, replaced by a creeping, suffocating terror. On the floor, Sofia looked up in sheer confusion, her tears momentarily forgotten.

May you like

In a final, tight close-up, Alexander stared directly into Victoria's terrified eyes, stripping away every lie she had ever told.

So tell me why you're wearing the necklace she left my sister, he said quietly.
