Chapter 4 - The velvet cage

The morning sun broke over the Beverly Hills estate, casting long, golden shadows across the manicured lawns. The mansion had been transformed overnight from a luxurious home into a heavily fortified compound. Alexander had doubled the perimeter security, replacing the standard guards with elite, off-the-books contractors loyal only to him. No one entered or left without his direct authorization.

Sofia was instructed to remain in the master wing. She was provided with elegant, comfortable clothes—cashmere sweaters and silk trousers—that replaced her maid's uniform. Yet, despite the luxury, she felt like a bird trapped in a velvet cage. Her mind was a chaotic storm of suppressed memories and terrifying revelations. If Alexander was right, her entire life of poverty and servitude was a meticulously engineered lie constructed by the Thorne family.

While Alexander was locked in his study, coordinating a massive, covert audit of Richard Thorne's corporate empire, Sofia stepped out onto the expansive stone terrace for some fresh air. The gardens were quiet, the scent of blooming jasmine heavy in the air.

As she walked near the intricate hedge maze, a shadow detached itself from the ancient oak tree.

Hello, little maid, a venomous, familiar voice purred.

Sofia spun around. Victoria stood there, wearing a sleek black trench coat, her blonde updo replaced by a severe, straight style. Her icy blue eyes bore into Sofia with absolute hatred. Victoria had bypassed the new security protocols using a hidden service gate code she had secretly retained from her time as the future lady of the house.

How did you get in here? Sofia asked, taking a step backward, her heart hammering against her ribs.

I built the security protocols for this estate, you idiot, Victoria sneered, stepping closer. You think you've won, don't you? You think because Alexander found a pathetic little picture, you're suddenly going to be the princess of the Sterling empire?

I don't want anything from him, Sofia said, her voice surprisingly steady despite her trembling hands. I just want the truth.

The truth is that you are a liability, Victoria snapped. She reached into her trench coat and pulled out a thick, sealed envelope. Inside this envelope is a certified cashier's check for ten million dollars, and a forged passport with a new identity. You will take this, you will walk out the service gate behind me, and you will disappear to Europe. Today.

Sofia stared at the envelope. It was more money than she could comprehend in a lifetime. You're trying to buy my silence.

I am offering you your life, Victoria corrected, her tone dropping to a lethal whisper. If you stay here, my father will crush Alexander's company, and he will ensure you suffer a very tragic, fatal accident. You don't belong in this world, little maid. Take the money and run.

Sofia looked at the arrogant heiress. She thought of the portrait in the gallery, the hazel eyes that matched her own, and the protective, desperate look in Alexander's gray eyes when he pulled her from the floor. A sudden, unfamiliar courage surged through her veins.

I'm not leaving, Sofia said, her voice ringing clear and resolute across the gardens. I'm not leaving until Alexander tells me to.

Victoria's face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. She raised her hand, preparing to deliver another vicious slap.

Before her hand could descend, a massive, powerful grip clamped onto her wrist like a steel vice.

Victoria shrieked, twisting around. Alexander stood there, his athletic physique coiled with terrifying tension. His dark hair was messy from lack of sleep, but his piercing gray eyes were deadly alert. He twisted Victoria's wrist just enough to make her gasp in pain, forcing her to drop the envelope onto the stone path.

I told you never to touch her again, Alexander growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

Alexander, let me go! Victoria demanded, struggling uselessly against his immense strength. She is manipulating you!

Alexander effortlessly shoved Victoria backward, positioning his broad-shouldered frame entirely between her and Sofia. The only one manipulating anything is your father, Richard. I just spent the last four hours tracking the offshore accounts Vanguard Holdings used to fund the orphanage that kept my sister hidden.

Victoria froze, the blood draining from her sculpted cheekbones. He knew. The game was up.

Your access codes are burned. If you or your father step within a mile of this estate again, I won't call the police. I will handle you myself, Alexander promised, a dark, chilling threat hanging in the air.

Victoria glared at Sofia with unadulterated venom before turning and fleeing toward the service gate.

Alexander watched her go, his jaw tight. He turned to Sofia, his expression softening instantly. Are you alright?

May you like

Sofia nodded, her enormous hazel eyes wide. She tried to pay me to leave.

Alexander looked down at the envelope on the ground. He stepped on it with his expensive leather shoe. They are terrified of you, Sofia. Because you are the key to tearing their empire down. Come inside. It's time we found out exactly who you are.
