Chapter 10 - The emerald legacy

The suppressed gunshot was surprisingly loud, a sharp crack that tore through the opulent air of the ballroom. Alexander collided with Sofia, wrapping his powerful arms around her delicate frame, driving them both to the floor to minimize their profile. As they hit the ivory marble, Alexander let out a sharp, guttural grunt of pain.
The bullet had grazed his broad shoulder, tearing through the fine Italian wool of his black suit jacket and slicing a shallow, bleeding groove across his bicep. He ignored the burning pain entirely. He rolled, positioning his body as a human shield over his sister, ensuring she was completely unharmed.
Victoria stood in shock, the smoking weapon trembling in her hand. Before she could realign her aim, Marcus, the head of security, tackled her from the blindside. The heiress crashed violently to the floor, her champagne-gold gown tearing as Marcus ripped the gun from her grip and pinned her hands behind her back with heavy zip-ties.
The ballroom descended into chaotic, flashing lights as sirens wailed outside. The LAPD, tipped off by Alexander’s legal team moments before the confrontation, flooded the venue. Uniformed officers dragged a screaming, hysterical Victoria, a defeated Richard Thorne, and a bleeding, silent Uncle Elias out of the ballroom in handcuffs. The three architects of a twenty-two-year nightmare were finally marching toward their absolute ruin.
Alexander slowly pushed himself up from the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder. Sofia scrambled to her knees beside him, her enormous hazel eyes wide with terror, her hands hovering over his wound.
You're bleeding! Sofia cried, her voice trembling.
It’s just a graze, Alexander grunted, offering a strained but genuinely warm smile. He looked at her, his piercing gray eyes filled with an overwhelming, profound relief. Are you okay?
I'm fine, because of you, Sofia whispered, helping him to his feet.
Two days later, the official DNA results were delivered directly to Alexander’s sprawling, sunlit office on the top floor of Sterling Enterprises. The documents confirmed what their hearts had already known: Sofia was an absolute, 99.9% genetic match. She was Sofia Sterling, the long-lost daughter of the empire.
The timid maid in the black-and-white uniform was a ghost of the past. Sofia stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Los Angeles, wearing a sleek, tailored ivory pantsuit that perfectly complimented her dark hair, which fell in loose, confident waves. She looked breathtaking, radiating the natural, effortless grace of her late mother.
Alexander sat at his massive mahogany desk, his arm in a stylish black sling. He signed the final piece of paperwork, officially transferring fifty percent of the Sterling empire’s voting shares into Sofia’s name. He had named her co-CEO, ensuring that the legacy their mother had bled for would be managed by both of her children.
It feels surreal, Sofia said, looking down at the bustling city below. A week ago, I was terrified of breaking a vase. Now, I own half of this skyline.
You were never meant to sweep floors, Sofia, Alexander said, leaning back in his leather chair, a proud smile touching his sharp masculine jaw. You are a Sterling. You belong at the top.
The sibling bond between them had forged into an unbreakable steel chain, forged in the fires of betrayal and survival. The dynasty was secure.
Six months passed. The trials of the Thorne family and Elias Sterling dominated the news, resulting in lifelong federal prison sentences. The company thrived under the dual leadership of Alexander's ruthless business acumen and Sofia's empathetic, brilliant philanthropic initiatives.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Sofia sat alone in her immaculate corner office. The door clicked open, and her executive assistant walked in, carrying a small, unmarked black velvet box.
This just arrived for you, Ms. Sterling, the assistant said, looking confused. It bypassed the mailroom scanners. A private courier handed it directly to security downstairs, heavily encrypted.
Sofia frowned. Leave it on the desk. Thank you.
When the door closed, Sofia approached the desk. Her heart beat a slightly faster rhythm. The box looked identical to the one that usually housed high-end jewelry. She slowly lifted the lid.
Resting on the black velvet was a breathtaking, antique emerald ring, perfectly matching the enormous emerald-and-diamond necklace that had started it all.
Tucked beneath the ring was a small, heavy piece of parchment cardstock. The handwriting was elegant, sharp, and penned in dark, emerald-green ink.
Sofia unfolded the note. It read:
You wear the necklace beautifully, little bird. But your mother had more secrets than just you. The board is resetting. The game isn't over. - V
Sofia’s blood ran slightly cold. 'V'. Victoria was locked in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, devoid of all resources and outside contact. It was impossible for her to have orchestrated this delivery. Unless she wasn't acting alone. Unless the conspiracy surrounding her mother's death was vastly deeper, darker, and more extensive than the Thorne family and a treacherous uncle.

Sofia did not panic. She did not tremble. The timid maid was truly dead. She picked up the emerald ring, sliding it onto her finger where it fit perfectly. She walked to the window, her enormous hazel eyes narrowing as she stared out at the rain-slicked city of Los Angeles.
Let them come, Sofia whispered to the empty room, a fierce, commanding smile touching her rosy lips. She was Sofia Sterling, and she was ready for whatever shadows the past dared to send her way.
