Chapter 8 - A Visitor at Midnight

The storm hit the Niagara peninsula around midnight, lashing the floor-to-ceiling windows of Lakeview Manor with driving rain. Caleb had stayed late in the logistics office, auditing the bills of lading alongside Elena Vance, a brilliant supply-chain analyst whom Jerry had hired six months prior to modernize their maritime fleet.
Elena was sharp, quiet, and possessed an encyclopedic memory for shipping manifests. Over the past several months, Caleb had found himself admiring her quiet dignity—a stark, healing contrast to the loud, performative vanity that had once enslaved him in Shelby’s circle.
"Caleb, look at this terminal sequence," Elena said, tapping a glowing monitor. "Three of our bulk grain freighters departing Thunder Bay have been flagged for surprise administrative customs holds by an obscure maritime board official named Henderson. If those holds last seventy-two hours, the perishable penalty clauses trigger automatically. It will cost Wallace Holdings eight million dollars a day."
Caleb leaned over her shoulder, his brow furrowing as he smelled the faint, clean scent of rain and lemon tea that always lingered around her. "Henderson was appointed two weeks ago. Who backed his nomination?"
"A shell company subsidiary funded by Aegis Sovereign Capital," Elena replied grimly. "They aren't just attacking our stock, Caleb. They are physically choking our supply arteries."
Before Caleb could answer, the security intercom on the wall crackled to life, followed by the agitated voice of Donald, the head of estate security.
"Mr. Caleb? Sir, you need to come to the front iron gates immediately. We have an individual trespassing on the outer perimeter. She refused to leave, and... well, sir, she claims she knows you."
A cold premonition seized Caleb’s chest. Leaving Elena by the monitors, he grabbed a heavy oilskin coat and drove the utility truck down the mile-long winding driveway to the main gate. The headlights sliced through the torrential curtain of rain, illuminating two security officers standing over a soaked, shivering figure huddled against the stone pillar.
The woman was drenched to the bone, her designer trench coat torn and caked in wet gravel, her dark blonde hair plastered over a bruised face. When she looked up into the glare of the truck’s high beams, Caleb’s breath caught in his throat.
It was Shelby Daniels.
Gone were the diamond-encrusted earrings, the flawless porcelain makeup, and the haughty, venomous smirk that had terrorized his mother in the wedding ballroom. Her lips were blue from hypothermia, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.
"Caleb..." Shelby choked out, dropping to her knees in the mud as he stepped out into the rain. "Please. Please don't call the police. She’s going to kill me."
Caleb stopped five feet away, his fists clenching inside the coat pockets, the ghost of his mother’s shattered spectacles flashing before his eyes. "You violated your probation by coming within five miles of this property, Shelby. What game are you playing?"
May you like
"It’s not a game!" she screamed hysterically, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. "My mother... Victoria! She didn't come back to save us! She came back to destroy your family, and she’s using my father and me as bait! She told the federal prosecutors that *I* orchestrated the offshore fraud, not Richard! If I don't help her ruin your father, she’s sending me to federal prison for twenty years!"
