Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

The autumn breeze sweeping across Lakeview Manor carried the crisp scent of pressed grapes and turning leaves, but down in the industrial belly of Wallace Maritime in Hamilton, the atmosphere was thick with tension. A year had passed since the catastrophic wedding ballroom incident that had shattered illusions and rebuilt the Wallace family from the marrow out. Caleb Wallace, once blinded by manufactured status and an insatiable desire to impress high society, now wore steel-toed boots and grease-stained denim with the pride of an honest craftsman. He had earned the respect of three hundred dockworkers not because his father owned the empire, but because he had loaded shipping containers shoulder-to-shoulder with them during the freezing winter blizzards.

Jerry Wallace watched from the second-floor mezzanine of the primary terminal, leaning against the cold iron railing. His wife, Kathy, stood beside him, her warm hands clasped over Jerry’s forearm. Kathy’s vision had fully healed after multiple surgeries, yet she still kept the scratched tortoiseshell spectacles from that terrible night tucked inside a velvet-lined box on her desk—a quiet reminder that human dignity was non-negotiable.

"He's found his spine, Jerry," Kathy whispered softly, a proud, tender smile touching the corners of her mouth as they watched Caleb coordinate a sixty-ton container transfer with precision and calm authority.

"He found his heart, Kathy," Jerry corrected gently, kissing her temple. "A spine just keeps you standing. A heart tells you who you’re standing for."

Their peace, however, was about to be fractured.

The heavy glass door behind them opened. Frank Morrison, Jerry’s chief legal counsel and confidant of thirty years, stepped onto the catwalk. Frank didn’t carry his usual calm demeanor; his silver eyebrows were knotted, and he held a thick manila dossier clamped under his arm like a shield.

"Jerry. We have an anomaly," Frank said without preamble, his voice dropping below the roar of diesel cranes below. "A concentrated, aggressive short position has been taken against Wallace Maritime’s regional commercial bonds over the last forty-eight hours. Someone is dumping millions into synthetic put options, betting our municipal transport contracts will be revoked by Friday."

Jerry didn't flinch. His gray eyes remained as steady as granite. "Richard Daniels doesn't have the liquidity to buy a coffee cart, let alone manipulate sovereign municipal bonds. His logistics firm was liquidated to the penny."

"It isn't Richard," Frank said, opening the folder to reveal a series of corporate filings originating from a private equity firm registered in Zurich named *Aegis Sovereign Capital*. "Richard is broke, yes. But his ex-wife isn't."

Kathy’s breath hitched. "Victoria?"

Jerry’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. Victoria Vance-Daniels had divorced Richard a decade earlier, fleeing to Switzerland with hundreds of millions in offshore assets before Daniels Logistics ever faced scrutiny. She was a ruthless corporate raider known in European financial circles as the 'Iron Widow.'

"Victoria has touched down at Pearson International this morning," Frank murmured. "And her first public statement to the business wire was that Wallace Holdings ruined her family’s name over a 'domestic misunderstanding'—and that she has come to Toronto to settle the debt."
