Chapter 14 - The Meeting at Pier 44

The black waters of Lake Ontario churned violently against the decaying timber pilings of Pier 44. Fog rolled over the industrial shipping yards, swallowing the sodium lights in an eerie orange haze.

Wallace Maritime’s twin-engine tactical launch cut silently through the harbor swell, docking beneath the shadows of Warehouse 7’s abandoned loading gantry. Caleb, Jerry, and two tactical officers moved swiftly up the rusted iron maintenance ladder, entering the cavernous, derelict building.

"Shelby!" Caleb called out in a low, sharp whisper, scanning the towering stacks of rotting wooden crates.

From behind an overturned forklift, a small, terrified figure emerged. Shelby clutched a metallic hard drive to her chest, her clothes torn, her face white as bone.

"Caleb!" she cried, running forward.

"Stay down!" a voice boomed from the overhead catwalk.

A blinding spotlight snapped on, illuminating Caleb and Shelby in a searing circle of white light. Marcus Sterling stood on the catwalk above, flanked by three armed private security guards. His tailored suit was unbuttoned, his tie loose, his eyes manic with the desperation of a billionaire facing a lifetime behind bars.

"Drop the drive, girl, or you die right there," Marcus snarled, raising a suppressed semi-automatic pistol.

"Marcus, it’s over!" Jerry’s voice boomed through the warehouse like an artillery shell. Jerry stepped directly out of the shadows, putting himself in the open, drawing the attention of the gunmen. "Federal marshals have already frozen your accounts in Nassau and Zurich. There is nowhere on this earth your money can hide you."

"I don't need the earth, Wallace," Marcus sneered. "I just need a boat to international waters, and your son’s corpse as insurance!"

Marcus leveled the pistol directly at Caleb’s chest and pulled the trigger.

"No!"

Shelby screamed, hurling her body forward with wild, reckless abandon. The sharp *crack* of the gunshot echoed off the corrugated metal walls. Shelby took the impact full in the shoulder, collapsing into Caleb’s arms as blood bloomed across her jacket.

"Cover!" Jerry roared, diving toward the catwalk support pillar as the OPP tactical officers returned fire with deafening precision, shattering the spotlight and dropping two of Marcus’s guards in seconds.

Caleb caught Shelby as she hit the concrete, pressing his hand desperately against her wound. "Shelby! Stay with me! Keep your eyes open!"

Shelby looked up into Caleb’s eyes through tears of excruciating pain, her trembling, bloodied hand shoving the hard drive into his chest. "Tell... tell Kathy... I’m sorry..." she choked out before her eyes rolled back into her head.
