Chapter 24 - Blood Against Blood

By midnight, the storm had finally broken.
The harbor had been secured by federal environmental response units and Coast Guard containment booms. The oil slick was being systematically vacuumed, and not a single home or fishing trawler in Lakeview Harbor had been damaged.
Up on the bluff, Lakeview Manor was bathed in the warm, golden glow of its estate lanterns.
In the grand drawing room, a roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth. Jerry sat in his leather armchair, clean and bandaged, holding a warm mug of cider Martha had prepared for him.
The door opened, and Kathy walked in, accompanied by Detective Miller of the Massachusetts State Police.
"It’s official, Jerry," Kathy said, her face finally showing a genuine, exhausted smile. "The federal magistrate in Boston has denied Thomas bail on grounds of being an extreme flight risk and an active threat to national infrastructure. Interpol has seized all Vanguard Sovereign assets in Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Over four hundred million dollars in recovered wartime bullion has been placed in an international restitution escrow."
"And Marcus Sterling?" Martha asked quietly.
"Marcus Sterling just signed a full cooperation agreement," Detective Miller answered. "He admitted that his daughter Victoria’s engagement to Caleb was orchestrated from the start by Thomas. Victoria was promised a twenty-million-dollar payoff once Lakeview Manor was legally compromised. She’s currently in federal custody in New York, facing federal conspiracy and bank fraud charges."
Caleb, standing near the window with Elena, took a deep breath. The ghost that had haunted his conscience for months had finally been completely eradicated. Victoria Daniels wasn't just a terrible mistake; she was a mercenary weapon sent by a madman, and she had failed utterly against the strength of their family.
"What happens to the maritime charter now, Kathy?" Jerry asked softly.
"The charter has been amended by federal decree," Kathy said, handing a gold-embossed document to Jerry. "Full, unencumbered ownership of Wallace Maritime Holdings and Lakeview Manor has been permanently vested in you, Jerry. And under the new succession bylaws we filed this afternoon, Caleb has been named Executive Vice Chairman and primary heir."
Jerry looked at the document, then looked up at his son.
"Come here, Caleb," Jerry said.
Caleb stepped forward, standing before his father.
Jerry stood up slowly. He looked at Caleb's hands—the calluses from the docks, the minor cuts from the valve station tonight. He saw a man who had earned his place, not by birthright, but by sacrifice, courage, and unconditional love for his mother and his home.
Jerry unpinned a small, antique gold anchor from his own lapel—the insignia their father had given him when he earned his master’s license in 1975.
With steady hands, Jerry pinned the gold anchor onto Caleb's collar.
"You are the master of this vessel now, son," Jerry said, his voice thick with emotion. "I couldn't be prouder to have you at the helm."

Tears welled in Caleb's eyes as he embraced his father, Martha stepping in to wrap her arms around both of them, the nightmare that had begun on a humiliating wedding floor finally giving way to triumphant unity.
