Chapter 26 - The Reckoning and the Deeper Abyss

The celebration continued late into the night, the music spilling out over the quiet lawns of Lakeview Manor.

At 1:30 AM, after the last of the harbor guests had been escorted home by private shuttles and the great house was slowly settling into slumber, Jerry walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the harbor.

The ocean was calm now, a mirror of black glass reflecting a sky full of brilliant, cold winter stars. Caleb walked out behind him, carrying two glasses of vintage port from the manor's oldest cellar.

"A quiet night, Dad," Caleb said softly, handing a glass to his father.

"A hard-won night, son," Jerry replied, taking a sip, enjoying the rich warmth of the wine. "You should get some rest. Tomorrow, the fleet resumes full international schedules."

"I will," Caleb smiled. "Just wanted to make sure the watch was secure."

Suddenly, Donald stepped onto the terrace. He wasn't carrying a weapon, but his face had turned a pale, sickly gray under the terrace lantern light. His hands were shaking.

Jerry frowned, setting his glass down on the stone balustrade. "Donald? What is it? Has Thomas made a move from the federal holding facility?"

"Mr. Wallace..." Donald’s voice cracked. "Thomas Wallace is dead."

Jerry and Caleb both stiffened.

"What?" Caleb gasped. "How? He was under twenty-four-hour maximum suicide watch at the metropolitan correctional center!"

"It wasn't suicide," Donald said, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Twenty minutes ago, the federal convoy transporting him to the high-security medical wing was ambushed on Interstate 95 by three unmarked tactical assault vehicles. The marshals were neutralized with military-grade EMP and neurotoxin gas. Thomas was pulled from the vehicle. When the tactical backup arrived... they found him on the highway shoulder."

Jerry felt a cold, familiar dread grip his chest. "How was he killed, Donald?"

Donald swallowed hard, pulling a sealed evidence bag from his jacket. Inside was a heavy, blackened iron token stamped with an insignia that made Jerry’s breath stop entirely in his throat.

It was not a raven.

It was an imperial double-headed eagle clutched in the talons of a deep-sea serpent—the dreaded, classified insignia of the *Orion Directorate*, the shadowy Soviet-era covert salvage cabal that had supposedly been dismantled at the end of the Cold War.

"They didn't kill him to punish him, Mr. Wallace," Donald whispered, his voice trembling. "They executed him for failing his mission. Attached to Thomas's chest was a message pinned with a titanium naval dagger."

Donald handed the transcription to Jerry.

In the pale moonlight, Jerry read the short, chilling sentence typed in cold military block letters:

*“Thomas was merely the surveyor. The five tons of gold on the Sovereign was never the real cargo. You have forty-eight hours to deliver the Black Core from the lower ballast of the Sea Monarch, Gerald Wallace... or we will erase Lakeview Manor and everyone inside it from the face of the earth.”*

Before Jerry could utter a single word, the deep, low-frequency hum of a massive turbine resonated from the dark ocean below the bluff.

Jerry and Caleb rushed to the stone edge of the terrace.

Emerging from the pitch-black waters of the harbor, half a mile beyond the outer reef, a monolithic, nuclear-class stealth submarine broke the surface without a single navigational light, its massive black conning tower slicing through the ocean like a ghost, aiming its primary missile arrays directly at the heart of Lakeview Manor.
