Chapter 9 - The New Chapter

Two years passed in a blur of peaceful routine and quiet triumphs.
The federal trial concluded with Connor receiving an eight-year sentence at a medium-security federal correctional facility upstate. The restitution orders stripped him and Paige of every remaining asset, auctioning off their luxury cars, designer bags, and jewelry to partially reimburse the family trust and the municipal funds they had embezzled. Paige’s name vanished entirely from high-society circles, relegated to the quiet, bitter whispers of people who once invited her to charity galas.
For Liam and me, our lives flourished in the absence of toxicity. Liam’s architectural firm promoted him to senior project director, recognizing not only his exceptional design talent but his unwavering integrity during the crisis. My freelance copywriting business expanded into a full-scale boutique creative agency, allowing me to hire three full-time writers and work from our sunlit home office overlooking the garden.
Miles was now nine years old, thriving in school, playing youth soccer, and—much to Liam’s immense pride—showing a passionate talent for baking. Every weekend, father and son could be found flour-dusted from head to toe in the kitchen, experimenting with elaborate pastry designs that far surpassed simple dinosaur cakes.
"Dad, do you think we can make a two-story volcano cake for my double-digits birthday next year?" Miles asked one Saturday morning, balancing a bowl of batter on the counter while flour dusted his nose like a dusting of snow.
Liam grinned, wiping a streak of chocolate frosting across Miles's cheek. "A two-story volcano? Son, with your mother’s engineering help and my baking skills, we could build the entire prehistoric Jurassic Park out of fondant and rice crispy treats."
I walked into the kitchen, leaning against the doorframe with a mug of coffee in hand, smiling warmly at the two most important men in my life. "Just remember, no one is allowed to elbow this one, or I’ll find a way to burn their entire wardrobe in the backyard fire pit."
Miles burst into a fit of giggles, while Liam pulled me into a playful headlock, kissing the top of my head.

"Trust me, babe," Liam laughed, looking down into my eyes with infinite affection. "The only thing burning in our backyard from now on is marshmallows and firewood."
Life wasn't about perfection; it was about resilience, boundaries, and knowing when to stand your ground so that the people you love can grow up in a world free of fear. We had weathered the worst storm imaginable, and on the other side of it, we found a peace that was completely unshakeable.
