Chapter 7 - The Dust Settles

The aftermath of the Grandview ballroom incident swept through the family and local community like a Category 5 hurricane. Within forty-eight hours, the local news outlets picked up the story: Prominent Municipal Lawyer and Wife Arrested in Massive Embezzlement and Bribery Scheme.
Connor’s law firm immediately suspended him indefinitely, stripping him of his partnership and scrubbing his name from their website by Monday morning. The state bar association initiated emergency disbarment proceedings. Meanwhile, federal investigators seized all of their liquid assets, freezing their bank accounts, putting their luxury suburban home into receivership, and impounding both of their European sports cars.
Paige found herself completely abandoned. The high-society friends she had lorded her status over suddenly developed selective amnesia, refusing to answer her calls or post bail. With their accounts frozen, she was forced to move back in with her aging parents, squeezed into her childhood bedroom with nothing left of her designer wardrobe except what she could salvage from the thrift store drop-offs.
Our family, on the other hand, experienced a profound, beautiful healing.
On a sunny Tuesday afternoon two weeks after the arrest, Liam, Miles, and I stood in our backyard. The gray concrete patio had been power-washed clean, sparkling in the sunlight. In the center of the yard stood a brand-new, even more magnificent creation: a custom-built, five-tier dinosaur habitat cake complete with edible sugar volcanoes, cascading chocolate waterfalls, and a miniature fondant figure of Miles riding a T-Rex.
My father-in-law had personally funded the replacement party, driving over with tears in his eyes to apologize for ever allowing Connor to manipulate the family dynamics for so long.
"How’s the birthday boy?" my father-in-law asked, scooping Miles up into his arms and tossing him gently into the air, eliciting a burst of high-pitched giggles.
"The best birthday ever, Grandpa!" Miles beamed, wearing his dinosaur party hat at a jaunty angle.
Liam wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched our son run across the grass toward the new cake table.
"You know," Liam murmured softly into my ear, a warm smile playing on his lips, "you are officially the most dangerous woman I have ever met. And I’ve never loved you more."
I leaned back against his chest, smiling as I watched the sunlight catch the emerald green frosting of the cake. "Never poke a mama bear when she’s protecting her cub. Especially not over a dinosaur cake."
"Lesson learned," Liam laughed, pressing a tender kiss to my temple. "So... what are we doing with the fire pit this weekend? Roasting marshmallows?"
May you like
"Only if you promise not to let anyone ruin the sugar," I replied, turning around in his arms to kiss him.
The nightmare was over. The toxic cloud that had hovered over our family for years had been permanently burned away, leaving behind a clean slate, an unbreakable bond, and a future brighter than we had ever dared to imagine.
