Chapter 2 - The Shockwave Across the Lawn

Connor’s face morphed from disbelief to an ugly, mottled purple. He lunged toward the fire pit as if he intended to fish his wife’s burning status symbol out of the ash, but the blistering heat wave forced him back, coughing and sputtering. A plume of toxic smoke rose, carrying with it the unmistakable scent of burning calfskin and melted gold hardware.

"My wife’s bag! That was limited edition! You psychotic bitch!" Connor roared, pivoting on his heel to glare at me with venomous hatred. Saliva flew from his lips as he pointed a trembling finger at my chest. "You are going to pay for every single cent of that! Paige, call the cops! Call them right now!"

Paige finally snapped out of her paralyzed trance. The facade of aristocratic detachment shattered completely, replaced by a shrill, hysterical wail that could wake the dead. She dropped to her knees near the smoldering metal ring, staring in sheer horror at the black, twisted lump of synthetic leather and charred fabric that was once her prized accessory.

"My Gucci... my baby... it’s gone! It’s completely gone!" she shrieked, tears instantly carving tracks through her meticulously applied makeup. She whipped her head around, fixing me with a glare of pure, unadulterated malice. "You ruined my life! You are absolute trash! Connor, make them pay! Make them lose everything!"

Across the lawn, the twenty-five guests stood frozen in clusters like statues. Some covered their mouths in shock; others whispered behind trembling hands. Not a single person stepped forward to comfort Paige or Connor. They had all seen what I saw. They had all watched Paige deliberately clip that table, heard her casual, mocking "Oops," and witnessed the cold cruelty behind her actions.

My husband, Liam, slowly rose from the concrete. The green buttercream clung to the knees of his jeans like a badge of dishonor, but his posture had changed. The defeated slouch was gone. His shoulders were squared, his jaw set like granite. He stepped between Connor and me, shielding me with his broad frame.

"Back off, Connor," Liam said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, devoid of its usual warm inflection. It was the tone of a man pushed past his absolute limit. "Don't you ever raise your voice at my wife again."

"Your wife is a criminal!" Connor shrieked, trying to shove past Liam. "She destroyed property! We’re pressing charges! We’re suing you into the stone age! Look at what she did!"

"And look at what your wife did to my son," Liam countered, his voice rising, carrying effortlessly across the silent yard. He pointed a steady finger down at the ruined dinosaur cake, the smashed graham-cracker terrain, and the icing smeared across the gray patio stones. "She didn't trip, Connor. She walked four feet out of her way to destroy a seven-year-old boy's birthday cake. A cake I stayed up for forty-eight hours to bake. She broke my son's heart on purpose. Burning a bag is getting off light."

Paige sobbed louder, rocking back and forth on the grass. "It was an accident! I slipped! My shoe caught on the paving stone!"

"There are no paving stones by that table, Paige. It's smooth, level concrete," Aunt Sarah piped up from the edge of the patio, her voice sharp and unforgiving. Sarah had known Paige for years and had never liked her. "We all saw you stick your elbow out like a linebacker. Don't lie."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd. The illusion of Paige’s blameless victimhood evaporated in an instant.

Connor looked around wildly, realizing that not a single face in the crowd was sympathetic to their plight. His face flushed a deeper shade of crimson. "You’re all delusional! A purse is worth real money! A stupid cake is just sugar and flour! You people are trash!"

"Get off my property," Liam said, stepping forward, his presence towering over Connor. "Take your crying wife, take your ruined bag, and get out of my house before I throw you both out myself."

Connor opened his mouth to retort, but something in Liam’s eyes—a dangerous, unyielding fire—made him swallow his words. He grabbed Paige by her upper arm, hauling her roughly to her feet.

"This isn't over," Connor snarled, spitting the words out like venom as he dragged his sobbing wife toward the front driveway. "You’ll be hearing from our lawyer by morning. You're going to lose your house over this!"

As the screech of their Audi tires peeling out echoed down the street, the tension in the backyard slowly began to diffuse. But the damage was done. Miles buried his face in my skirt, finally letting out the quiet, heartbroken sobs he had been holding back. I knelt down, wrapping my arms tightly around him, whispering soft promises into his hair, knowing full well that this was only the very first battle in a war they had forced us into.
