Chapter 1 - The Match That Lit the Powder Keg

At exactly four o'clock, the main event arrived. My husband, Liam, carefully carried out the dinosaur habitat cake he had spent two sleepless nights baking. My seven-year-old son, Miles, stood front and center, his eyes shining with pure happiness. Twenty-five voices joined together to sing "Happy Birthday."
As the song reached its final crescendo, I saw Paige—my "center of the universe" sister-in-law—emerging from the patio. She was wearing a pristine white sundress, clutching the $800 Gucci bag she had been bragging about for half a year. Her path grazed the cake table. There was at least four feet of empty clearance, but...
Everything unfolded in agonizing slow motion. Paige walked in a perfectly straight line. Just as she passed the edge of the table, she sharply jutted her right elbow outward.
It wasn't a graze. It was a calculated strike.
The tray slipped off the table. Time stopped as my husband's masterpiece plummeted, hitting the patio stones upside down. The cake detonated into sugary rubble. Green buttercream smeared violently across the gray concrete. Plastic dinosaurs scattered like shrapnel. The singing abruptly died. A deafening silence fell over the yard.
Paige didn't stop. She merely paused for a fraction of a second, glanced at the ruined mess at her feet, and uttered a single, flat syllable with detached annoyance:
"Oops."
Without another word, she resumed her march, her white dress still pristine.
I looked at Miles. He wasn't crying; his bottom lip trembled violently, his pale face trapped in the paralyzing shock of a child watching his perfect world shatter. Nearby, Liam dropped to his knees right into the frosting, looking up at me. It was the helpless defeat of a father who had just watched someone intentionally break his child’s spirit.
In that microscopic moment, something deep inside my chest simply snapped. The years of biting my tongue, of making excuses... it all evaporated.
An eerie, icy calm washed over my body. I bypassed my devastated husband and walked straight to the lounge chair where Paige had just set down her prized possession.
The white Gucci bag sat there, gleaming arrogantly in the sun.
I picked it up and walked purposefully to the heavy iron fire pit, currently pulsing with a bed of red-hot, thousand-degree embers. The heat blasted my face. I didn't hesitate. I didn't care about consequences. I held the $800 bag over the glowing coals, and I let go.
The pristine leather immediately began to violently curl and bubble. An ugly tongue of orange flame licked up, hungrily swallowing the designer logo. Acrid black smoke billowed upward.
I slowly turned my head, looking dead into Paige’s horrified, wide eyes through the glass door, making sure the entire silent backyard could hear my voice:
"Oops."
Three agonizing seconds of dead silence passed. Then Connor, her husband, came sprinting out of the house, his face twisted in unadulterated fury. He shrieked a question that shattered the air: "You’ve lost your mind!"

I looked him dead in the eye and uttered one word that changed everything:
"Karma."
