Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Strength

Ten years after the infamous dinosaur cake incident, our lives had transformed into something truly remarkable.
Miles was nineteen now, a freshman studying civil engineering at a top-tier university, carrying the same quiet strength and sharp intellect that his father possessed. On his nineteenth birthday, we didn't host a backyard party with superficial acquaintances or toxic relatives. Instead, we gathered around our large oak dining table with our closest, truest friends and family members who had stood by us through thick and thin.
In the center of the table sat a magnificent, towering architecture-themed cake—a flawless scale model of a suspension bridge made entirely of dark chocolate and spun sugar, built collaboratively by Liam and Miles.
As we raised our glasses to toast Miles’s transition into adulthood, my father-in-law stood up, leaning slightly on his cane, but smiling with radiant health and pride.
"To Miles," my father-in-law said, his voice ringing clear and strong across the room. "May you always build things that last, stand tall against adversity, and remember that real strength isn't measured by what designer labels you wear, but by the integrity of your character and the love of your family."
We all chimed in, "To Miles!" and glasses clinked together in a harmonious symphony of crystal.
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and Miles had gone out to celebrate with his college friends, Liam and I sat together on the back patio. The heavy iron fire pit glowed softly in the cool autumn air, casting dancing amber shadows across the stone pavers.
Liam wrapped a thick wool blanket around my shoulders, pulling me close against his side as we watched the embers crackle and spark into the star-studded night sky.
"Can you believe it's been ten years?" Liam whispered, resting his cheek against my hair. "It feels like a lifetime ago."
"It was a lifetime ago," I replied softly, leaning my head against his shoulder, feeling the steady, comforting beat of his heart. "We survived the fire, Liam. Literally and figuratively."
"Because you didn't flinch," Liam said, turning his face to press a gentle kiss to my lips. "You taught our son—and everyone else—that nobody ever gets to break our family's spirit and walk away unscathed."

I smiled into the darkness, watching a stray spark float upward toward the endless cosmos. Paige and Connor were distant, faded memories now—a cautionary tale of what happens when arrogance and cruelty collide with unyielding maternal fierce love.
Our home was filled with light, laughter, and unconditional love. We had built a sanctuary that nothing and no one could ever tear down. And as the fire slowly burned down to a warm, glowing bed of coals, I knew with absolute certainty that our happily ever after wasn't just a fairy tale—it was a masterpiece we had forged with our own hands.
