Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

There was no plea deal that could save them from the avalanche of federal and state evidence.
Judge Holbrook sentenced Richard Vance to eight years in state penitentiary for felony domestic violence, child abuse resulting in physical injury, and witness intimidation. In a separate federal trial three months later, Richard was convicted of wire fraud and grand larceny, adding an additional seven years to his sentence to run consecutively.
He would not be eligible for parole until Maya was well past adulthood.
Evelyn Vance fared no better. The state’s financial crimes division dismantled her nonprofit front organizations, seizing her primary residence, luxury vehicles, and bank accounts to fulfill mandatory restitution to Maya’s trust fund. Convicted of conspiracy to commit child exploitation, financial fraud, and witness tampering, she was sentenced to ten years at the women's correctional facility in Corona.
The family dynasty, built on vanity, cruelty, and stolen fortunes, dissolved into dust.
In our final divorce proceeding, Amanda Vance stood beside me as the judge granted me absolute legal and physical custody of Maya, full executive control over my father’s restored estate, and an irrevocable restraining order protecting Maya and me for the rest of our natural lives.
As Richard was led away in chains through the side door of the family court, he looked toward Amanda. "You destroyed your own family, Amanda."

Amanda looked at him with steady, unapologetic eyes. "No, Richard. You destroyed this family years ago. I just made sure Clara and Maya survived the wreckage."
