Chapter 4 - The Smear Machine

By eight o’clock the following morning, Evelyn’s machine had begun to churn.
I woke up on the pull-out couch in Amanda’s secure high-rise apartment to the sound of Amanda’s tablet chiming incessantly.
"Look at this," Amanda said, placing the tablet on the kitchen island.
Evelyn had launched an aggressive preemptive campaign. A heavily edited, blurry three-second video had been leaked to local community groups and parenting forums, showing me shoving the heavy dining chair across the floor and yelling at Richard. The caption, penned by Evelyn’s public relations contact, read:
*Tragedy at family birthday: Mentally unstable mother suffers violent breakdown, terrifying children and assaulting guests. Father wrongfully detained after attempting to protect his family.*
The comment section was already flooded with outrage. Neighbors we had known for years were chiming in, questioning my mental stability, repeating lies Richard had planted over the years about my "fragile emotional state."
Maya sat at the island, staring at the screen with wide, frightened eyes. "Mom... are people going to believe them?"
I turned the tablet face down and pulled my daughter close. "Lies run fast, Maya, but the truth carries an anchor. Watch what happens next."
I nodded to Amanda.
Amanda picked up her phone and dialed the managing editor of the city’s largest investigative news syndicate.
"This is Amanda Vance," she said crisply. "You ran a human-interest story on my family's foundation last year. In five minutes, I am transmitting the raw, unedited 4K footage of Richard Vance assaulting a ten-year-old girl, accompanied by authenticated audio proving premeditated trust fraud and domestic battery. You have exclusive rights to release it, provided it airs unedited on the noon broadcast."
