Chapter 2 - The Hidden Motive

The police cruiser pulled away with Richard in the back seat, his face pressed against the tinted glass, glaring with venomous rage. Evelyn remained on the porch, furiously dialing her high-priced attorneys while screaming threats of disinheritance at Daniel.

Daniel ignored her. He sat beside me on the front steps, plugged a pair of wired earphones into his phone, and handed one bud to me.

"I was setting up my phone on the kitchen counter to record a time-lapse of the party setup," Daniel explained quietly. "They didn't realize the microphone was active."

I pressed the earbud into my ear.

The audio crackled, followed by the familiar clinking of silverware. Then, Richard’s voice came through, cold and calculated:

*"The probate lawyer confirmed it this morning, Mom. Clara's father left the entire commercial trust directly to Maya, bypassing Clara completely. Clara is only the guardian until Maya turns eighteen."*

Evelyn’s voice responded, dripping with contempt: *"That old fool knew you’d take control of it. So what’s the legal workaround?"*

*"Under the trust’s contingency clause,"* Richard explained, *"if Maya is deemed mentally unfit or declared emotionally unstable before she turns eighteen, legal guardianship of the estate shifts to me as the surviving biological father, and Clara can be forced out of executive control. All we need is a documented history of severe behavioral problems. We push the kid until she lashes out. Once she breaks, we file for psychiatric institutionalization."*

Evelyn chuckled softly. *"Good. That little parasite has lived off our family name long enough. Break her spirit today. Start making the paper trail."*

Nausea surged through my stomach. It hadn’t been an outburst of sudden temper. It wasn’t a bad day or poor impulse control. It was premeditated psychological torture designed to break our ten-year-old daughter so they could plunder the multimillion-dollar estate my late father had built from scratch.

I looked down at Maya, who was shivering against my side despite the warm afternoon. The red welt across her cheek was turning purple.

"Daniel," I said, my voice dangerously calm, "send this audio file to my email, my lawyer, and back up a copy on three separate cloud drives."

"Already done," Daniel said firmly. "I kept quiet for too long while Richard bullied everyone in the family. I won’t let him ruin Maya."

May you like

Before Evelyn could march down the steps to confiscate Daniel's phone, I took Maya’s hand, walked to my car, and locked the doors. We didn't look back.
