Chapter 5 - The Bond Hearing

At two o’clock that afternoon, Richard stood before Judge Patricia Holbrook in Courtroom 4B for his preliminary bond hearing.

He was dressed in an orange county jumpsuit, his hair unwashed, his wrists cuffed to a chain around his waist. Evelyn sat on the defense side of the gallery, flanked by two corporate defense attorneys, glaring daggers at Amanda and me.

Richard’s lead attorney, Arthur Pendelton, stepped up to the podium with practiced swagger. "Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the community, an executive vice president at Vance Logistics, with no prior criminal record. This entire ordeal stems from a tragic domestic misunderstanding blown out of proportion by an estranged spouse. We ask for an immediate unsecured release on his own recognizance."

Judge Holbrook looked over her reading glasses, unamused. "Misunderstanding, Mr. Pendelton? Have you reviewed the prosecution’s submitted exhibits?"

Assistant District Attorney Marcus Ruiz stood up immediately.

"Your Honor, the State submits Exhibit A: full digital video depicting the defendant striking a ten-year-old child with enough force to cause internal oral hemorrhage, accompanied by Exhibit B: an authenticated audio recording showing the defendant and his mother conspiring to intentionally inflict psychological trauma on the minor child to defraud a multi-million-dollar trust."

Evelyn gasped audibly from the gallery. Richard’s face went chalk-white.

Pendelton stammered, caught completely off-guard. "Your Honor, the defense has not had adequate time to inspect the provenance of these recordings—"

"I have reviewed the files myself, counsel," Judge Holbrook interrupted, her voice cutting like a razor. "This court will not tolerate the physical brutalization of a child under the guise of parental discipline, particularly when motivated by financial predation."

She slammed her gavel down with thunderous finality.

"Bail is set at five million dollars, cash only. In the event bond is posted, the defendant is remanded to twenty-four-hour electronic monitoring, with an absolute protective order prohibiting contact with the victim, Clara Vance, and minor child Maya Vance. Step back."

As the bailiffs dragged Richard away, he locked eyes with me. For the first time in our marriage, there was no smugness left in his eyes—only pure, unadulterated fear.
