Chapter 12 - The Bail Hearing

The bail hearing at the Travis County Criminal Justice Center forty-eight hours later was packed to maximum capacity. Media vans lined the perimeter of the courthouse, their satellite dishes pointed toward the sky.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Marcus Kane and Chloe Vance. I was dressed in a tailored charcoal wool suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon. For the first time in my life, I felt completely untethered from the guilt that had kept me captive for thirty years.

Vanessa and Eleanor were led into the courtroom from the holding cells, wearing matching orange jumpsuits. Vanessa was weeping uncontrollably, her face bare of makeup, her blonde hair tangled and limp. Eleanor looked completely hollowed out, staring down at the defense table as if she were living in a nightmare from which she couldn't wake.

Judge Arthur Hernandez took the bench, his expression severe and unforgiving.

“We are here for bail determination in the matter of State of Texas v. Vanessa Carter-Hayes and Eleanor Carter,” Judge Hernandez began, flipping through the voluminous case file. “Counsel, I have reviewed the state’s preliminary evidence, including the proffer from co-defendant Julian Hayes.”

Vanessa’s defense attorney, a high-priced litigator hired using the last remaining non-frozen cash reserves, stood up. “Your Honor, my clients pose no danger to the community. They have deep roots in the Highland Park and Austin areas. We request an unsecured bond or a reasonable cash bail so they may assist in preparing their defense.”

ADA Sarah Sterling immediately rose to her feet.

“The State strongly opposes an unsecured bond, Your Honor,” Sterling argued firmly. “The defendants attempted to board an international flight to French Polynesia mere hours after discovering that their corporate fraud had been uncovered. Furthermore, the State has uncovered evidence that Eleanor Carter orchestrated the transfer of millions of dollars into offshore Cayman accounts. They represent a classic, high-level flight risk.”

Judge Hernandez nodded, looking over the rims of his glasses at Vanessa, who was dabbing her eyes with the sleeve of her jumpsuit.

“Mrs. Hayes,” Judge Hernandez said, his voice cold and echoing in the chamber. “The brazen nature of this fraud—stealing operational capital from a public corporation to fund personal luxuries and social vanity—is profoundly troubling. But what this court finds particularly egregious is the coordinated effort to publicly defame and destroy the victim in order to conceal criminal conduct.”

The judge brought his gavel down with a sharp crack.

“Bail for Vanessa Carter-Hayes is set at two million dollars, cash or surety. Bail for Eleanor Carter is set at three million dollars. In the event bail is posted, both defendants will be remanded to 24-hour house arrest with GPS ankle monitoring, and all travel privileges are entirely revoked.”

Vanessa let out a strangled sob, collapsing onto the table. “Two million dollars?! Mom, we don't have that! Everything is frozen!”

Eleanor didn't answer. She just stared blankly at the polished mahogany floor.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort them back to the holding facility, Vanessa’s eyes caught mine in the gallery. She looked at me with a mixture of sheer terror and desperate pleading, silently mouthing the words: *Brielle, please.*

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply held her gaze with steady, unwavering composure, watching as the heavy steel door closed behind them, locking them away from the world they had spent their entire lives exploiting.
