Chapter 11 - The Highland Park Luncheon

The following Tuesday afternoon, the Dallas society elite were gathered at an exclusive private dining club in Highland Park for the annual Rose Guild Charity Luncheon.
Vanessa had spent the last forty-eight hours in absolute denial. Convinced that the public scandal was simply a temporary PR hiccup that could be smoothed over with the right social connections, she had put on a pristine pearl-white Chanel suit, oversized designer sunglasses, and accompanied Eleanor to the country club.
She believed that if she presented an image of unshakeable wealth and poise, the high-society matriarchs would rally around her and convince their influential husbands to pressure the district attorney into dropping the inquiry.
They were seated at a prominent corner table, but the atmosphere was suffocatingly icy.
Every time Vanessa attempted to make eye contact with the women at neighboring tables, they turned away, whispering behind manicured hands. The viral unedited video was still generating millions of impressions. Parody videos of Vanessa dumping wine on people were circulating across every college campus in America. She was no longer a glamorous debutante; she was the national poster child for spoiled, entitled cruelty.
“Mom, tell Mrs. Kensington to look over here,” Vanessa muttered under her breath, nervously stirring her iced tea. “We need her husband’s firm to handle the crisis management.”
“Sit up straight, Vanessa,” Eleanor commanded through a stiff smile, her face plastered in thick foundation to hide her sleepless exhaustion. “Act like nothing is wrong. If we show weakness, these hyenas will tear us apart.”
At that moment, the heavy double glass doors of the private dining room opened.
A hush swept over the sixty high-society guests.
Four uniform Dallas Police officers entered the dining room, followed by Detective Vance and two investigators from the State Comptroller’s Division. They didn't pause at the host stand. They walked with steady, unhurried precision straight across the polished hardwood floor, heading directly toward table twelve.
Vanessa’s spoon clattered against her porcelain saucer. “Mom... what are they doing?”
Eleanor scrambled to her feet, knocking her linen napkin to the floor. “Officers! What is the meaning of this intrusion?! This is a private club!”
Detective Vance didn't even blink. He stepped forward, pulling a pair of stainless-steel handcuffs from his belt.
“Vanessa Carter-Hayes,” Detective Vance announced, his voice ringing through the cavernous, silent room. “You are under arrest pursuant to an active felony indictment for sixty-three counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.”
The room erupted into gasps. Several women pulled out their phones, snapping photos and recording video in real-time.
“Get your hands off me!” Vanessa shrieked, backing into the floral centerpiece. “Do you know who I am?! Julian! Where is Julian?!”
“Your husband is currently at the district attorney’s office signing his plea allocation,” Vance said bluntly, stepping forward, grabbing Vanessa’s manicured wrists, and clicking the steel cuffs securely around them behind her back.
“Mom! Do something!” Vanessa wailed, thrashing against Vance’s grip as she was pulled away from the table. “Mom!”
Eleanor lunged forward, her voice rising in a desperate screech. “Release my daughter! You have no right! We have resources! We will sue every single one of you!”
The second investigator stepped smoothly in front of Eleanor, presenting a second sealed document.
“Eleanor Carter,” the investigator said, pulling out a second pair of cuffs. “You are also under arrest for felony identity theft, bank fraud, and criminal conspiracy regarding the fraudulent conversion of the Brielle Carter Trust.”
Eleanor’s face drained of every ounce of blood. Her knees buckled, and two officers caught her by the arms, securing the cuffs around her wrists before she could hit the floor.
As the mother and daughter were marched through the dining room—past the open-mouthed stares of the society women who had once courted their favor—flashbulbs from external news crews waiting outside the club windows began flashing frantically.
