Chapter 10 - The Turncoat Husband

Julian Hayes didn’t wait for the state troopers to knock on his door a second time.

By 4:00 PM that same afternoon, he was seated in a windowless interview room at the Travis County Courthouse, accompanied by a prominent criminal defense attorney who specialized in corporate white-collar plea agreements.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Detective Vance, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Sterling, and Marcus Kane, representing Carter Logistics.

“My client is prepared to provide full, unredacted cooperation,” Julian’s lawyer announced, sliding an encrypted thumb drive across the table. “In exchange, we want a recommendation for immunity regarding the federal wire fraud charges, with sentencing limited to probation and full restitution on the corporate signature counts.”

ADA Sterling didn't touch the drive. She looked at Julian with an expression of pure, unadulterated disdain. “Mr. Hayes, your cooperation is only valuable if what’s on that drive is pristine. What are we looking at?”

Julian leaned forward, his hands shaking as he took a sip of lukewarm tap water. He looked broken, defeated, and desperate to save his own skin at any cost.

“It’s all on there,” Julian said, his voice hoarse. “Every email, every text thread, every voice memo. Vanessa initiated the entire scheme eight months ago. She knew Brielle had locked down the primary corporate operating accounts, so she instructed me to set up three shell entities under the umbrella of ‘Carter Event Staging LLC.’”

“And Eleanor?” Detective Vance pressed.

“Eleanor was the architect of the trust fund diversions,” Julian admitted, his words spilling out like a broken dam. “She had the power of attorney paperwork from when Mr. Carter was sick in hospice. She used that stale power of attorney to open an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. They transferred the three million dollars out of Brielle’s trust, laundered it through an interior design firm in Miami, and funneled it back into Vanessa’s personal checking accounts.”

Marcus Kane took careful notes. “And the incident at the wedding? The wine?”

Julian let out a bitter, self-deprecating groan. “It was Vanessa’s idea. She hired an amateur PR consultant on Instagram who told her that the fastest way to get brand sponsorships and a reality television casting call was to go viral as a ‘victimized bride.’ She planned to humiliate Brielle, edit the footage to make Brielle look like an aggressive, toxic older sister, and use the public outcry to pressure the board into removing Brielle as CEO.”

“And you went along with this?” ADA Sterling asked coldly.

“Vanessa promised me that when Brielle was pushed out, I would be voted in as CEO by Eleanor’s board allies,” Julian whispered, staring down at the metal table. “I was an idiot. She’s a sociopath, and Eleanor enables every single breath she takes.”

ADA Sterling reached out, pulled the encrypted thumb drive toward her, and slid it into her briefcase.

“We will review the materials, Mr. Hayes,” Sterling said, standing up. “If the data verifies your testimony, the DA will consider a deferred adjudication on the condition that you testify as the primary state’s witness against Vanessa Carter and Eleanor Carter in open court.”

Julian closed his eyes, let out a ragged breath, and nodded. “I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t let them drag me down with them.”
