Chapter 7 - The DNA Revelation

Two weeks later, the official court-ordered paternity results arrived in sealed white envelopes at Evelyn Vance’s office.
Mark sat across the conference table from me, flanked by his high-priced corporate defense attorney, Mr. Sterling. Diane sat in the corner of the room, looking pale, thin, and silent.
Evelyn opened the document, scanned the numbers quickly, and laid it flat on the mahogany table.
"Probability of Paternity: 99.99%," Evelyn read aloud, her voice smooth and decisive. "Mark Salazar is the biological father of Luke Salazar and Owen Salazar."
Mark closed his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. A strange mix of relief, grief, and pride flashed across his face. "My boys..." he whispered. "They are really my boys."
"They are biologically your sons, Mr. Salazar," Evelyn corrected sharply. "And under Ohio state law, you are now legally responsible for back child support totaling $142,000 for the past thirty-six months of unassisted care provided by my client."
Mr. Sterling cleared his throat nervously. "My client is prepared to pay the back support immediately, Ms. Vance. In exchange, we are requesting a standard joint-custody arrangement: alternate weekends, split holidays, and shared legal decision-making power."
"Denied," Evelyn said without a second's hesitation.
"On what grounds?!" Sterling demanded, leaning forward. "My client is a wealthy, established professional with zero criminal record!"
"On the grounds that your client abandoned his pregnant ex-wife, provided zero financial or emotional support for three years, and currently resides in a home undergoing formal divorce proceedings," Evelyn replied calmly, pulling out a secondary legal filing.
Mark snapped his head up. "Divorce proceedings?!"
"Emily Salazar filed for legal separation in Franklin County yesterday morning," Evelyn revealed, sliding a copy of the public filing across the table. "She has requested sole custody of her unborn child and an immediate freeze on your joint marital assets."
Mark’s face drained of all color. He looked at the paper, then at his mother, then at me. "Claire... please. You can't do this to me. I've lost my partnership. Emily left me. I’m losing everything!"
"You didn't lose everything because of me, Mark," I said, looking at him with zero anger left in my heart—only complete, crystalline clarity. "You lost everything because you treated human beings like disposable objects. You threw me away when you thought I was useless, and you used Emily to heal your bruised ego."
"I want to see my sons!" Mark yelled, tears spilling down his cheeks. "I am their father!"

"You will see them under supervised visitation at a court-designated center for two hours every second Saturday," I stated firmly. "And if you maintain consistent, sober, non-hostile behavior for twelve consecutive months, we will discuss expanding your time. But you will not disrupt their lives."
Mark slumped forward, burying his face in his hands, weeping openly in the quiet conference room.
