Chapter 6 - The Meeting with Emily

The coffee shop was quiet, filled with the aroma of roasted beans and low jazz music. Emily sat in a corner booth, wearing an oversized sweater, her face pale and swollen from hours of crying.

When I walked up, she didn't look at me with the arrogant spite she had shown at the party. She looked broken.

"Thank you for coming, Claire," she whispered, gesturing toward the seat across from her.

I sat down, keeping my posture upright and composure intact. "What do you want to talk about, Emily?"

Emily clutched her warm tea mug with shaking hands. "Mark told me... he told me you were lying. He told me you slept with another man four years ago and were trying to pin the boys on him to ruin our marriage."

"And did you believe him?" I asked quietly.

Emily let out a bitter, wet laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek. "I looked at the photos of Mark as a toddler that his mother keeps on her fireplace mantle. Your boys are his double. I’m not stupid, Claire."

She took a shaky breath, looking out the window at the passing traffic. "Mark lied to me about everything. He told me you were crazy. He told me you forced him into the divorce because you hated children. He built our entire relationship on the narrative that he was the victim of a cold, infertile woman."

"Mark is very good at playing the victim when things don't go his way," I said.

"My father called his managing director this morning," Emily revealed, her voice dropping to a whisper. "They are stripping Mark of his senior partnership track. My father told him that if he brings a public custody scandal into our family, he will be completely ruined financially."

"I didn't seek this out, Emily," I told her firmly. "Mark wrote a cruel note on an invitation meant to mock me. He invited me to a room full of strangers to humiliate me. He brought this disaster on himself."

"I know," Emily wept, covering her face. "I was horrible to you at the party. I was mean, and I was arrogant, and I thought I was special because I was giving him what you couldn't. I am so, so sorry, Claire."

I looked at this young woman, realizing how thoroughly Mark had manipulated her, using her pregnancy as a trophy to soothe his own fragile ego.

"You don't need to apologize to me, Emily," I said gently. "You need to protect your child. Mark doesn't love children—he loves the idea of children because they validate his pride. The moment things get hard, he runs."

Emily looked up, her eyes wide with a sobering realization. "What should I do?"

"Demand full financial transparency," I advised. "Get a good lawyer. And don't let him make you feel like you owe him your life just because he gave you a baby."
