Chapter 4 - The Legal Escalation

The quiet of my home in Westerville felt like a fortress after the storm at the baby shower. I made the boys grilled cheese sandwiches, sat with them while they watched their favorite cartoon, and tucked them into bed at eight o'clock, kissing their foreheads with a fierce, protective love.

At nine-thirty, headlights flashed against my living room blinds.

I looked through the window and saw Mark’s black luxury sedan parked at my curb. A moment later, his mother’s Lexus pulled up right behind him.

I didn't open the front door. I stepped onto the porch, locking the storm door behind me, and stood at the top of the wooden steps with my arms crossed over my chest.

Mark sprinted up the brick walkway, his tie loosened, his collar unbuttoned. Diane followed closely behind, clutching her designer coat around her shoulders.

"Claire, open the door," Mark said, his voice ragged. "Emily went to her mother's house in tears. My entire family is calling me. We need to do this now."

"There is nothing to do tonight, Mark," I said, keeping my voice low so as not to wake the boys. "It’s nearly ten o'clock."

"They are my sons!" Mark yelled, taking a step up the porch. "I spent seven years crying over empty nurseries! I spent thousands of dollars on doctors! I thought I was incapable of having children, Claire! And the whole time, you were raising my boys twenty minutes away from my house?!"

"You didn't think you were incapable, Mark," I reminded him bitterly. "You thought I was incapable. You blamed me. You divorced me. You left me alone."

"I was grieving!" Mark shouted defensively.

"No, you were selfish," I snapped back. "If you had stayed, if you had shown an ounce of loyalty or love, we would have discovered the pregnancy together. But you couldn't wait to get rid of me. You walked away. You buttoned your shirt the next morning and told me it changed nothing. Do you remember saying that, Mark?"

Mark swallowed hard, his eyes dropping to the porch floor.

Diane stepped past her son, her eyes pleading with me through the glass door. "Claire, I know I was distant. I know I didn't defend you when Mark was cruel. I regret it every single day. But those boys are my blood. They are my only grandsons. Please... don't punish two innocent children for our mistakes."

"I'm not punishing my children, Diane," I said firmly. "I am protecting them. They have a calm, stable, happy life. They don't know chaos, and they don't know conditional love. I will not let you drag them into Mark's messy second marriage."

"I’ve already called my lawyer, Claire," Mark said, his tone turning dark and aggressive as his pride reasserted itself. "He’s drafting an emergency petition for establishing paternity and court-ordered visitation. You can't keep my sons from me."

"I won't have to keep them from you, Mark," I replied smoothly. "Because tomorrow morning, my legal representation will file a petition for full sole custody, retro-active support, and a protective order based on the harassment you've displayed tonight."

"You wouldn't dare," Mark sneered.

"Try me," I said, stepping back inside and locking the heavy deadbolt.
