Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Mark’s World

Within forty-eight hours, the fallout from the baby shower exploded across Mark’s life like a slow-motion demolition.

Dublin high society is a small, tightly knit circle. The story of Mark Salazar’s ex-wife showing up at his second wife’s baby shower with three-year-old twin boys who looked identical to him spread through the country club circuit overnight.

On Tuesday morning, I sat in the high-rise office of my attorney, Evelyn Vance—a sharp, formidable family law specialist who had handled my divorce four years ago.

"Mark’s attorney sent over an informal request for a private DNA test," Evelyn said, sliding a document across her glass desk. "They are offering a substantial lump-sum settlement in exchange for a joint custody agreement and a strict non-disclosure clause."

"They want an NDA?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Mark’s father-in-law is major shareholder in his investment firm," Evelyn explained with a cold smile. "Emily’s family is furious. They feel deceived. If it comes out publicly that Mark fathered twins with his ex-wife weeks before finalizing his relationship with Emily, his position at the firm is completely compromised."

"I don't want his hush money, Evelyn," I said flatly. "I want my sons safe. I want full legal and physical custody."

"Then we order a court-certified DNA test on our terms," Evelyn stated. "We establish paternity legally, secure your sole custody, and demand full back child support calculated from the day the boys were born. That includes medical expenses, daycare costs, and a mandatory trust fund for their college education."

"Will he fight it?"

"Mark’s legal standing is weak, Claire," Evelyn replied. "He abandoned all parental duties for three years. A judge will not award joint custody to a father who didn't spend a single dollar or hour raising his children, especially when he has an unstable home environment with a pregnant, hostile spouse."

That afternoon, I received a private text message from an unknown number.

It was from Emily.

Claire, the text read. I need to speak with you. Alone. Please.

I sat in my car outside my office building for ten minutes, staring at the screen. I didn't owe Emily anything. She had been smug, cruel, and triumphant at the baby shower. But I was a mother, and she was currently carrying a child into a storm she hadn't created.

I texted back a single location: The coffee shop on High Street. 4:00 PM.
