Chapter 3 - An Unseen Hand

Sam was down to his last week of rent when an unexpected email arrived. The Sterling Heritage Foundation, a prestigious urban restoration firm specializing in historic landmarks, invited him for an interview as a junior preservation architect.

Sam had applied there two years ago without a response. Now, the firm’s senior partner spent an hour examining Sam’s old portfolio, nodding with quiet approval. Within two days, Sam was hired at a salary that could finally clear his family's lingering debts.

What Sam did not know was that the Sterling Foundation’s majority benefactor was the Whitfield Charitable Trust, directed by Audrey.

Their Saturday dinners continued in quiet, out-of-the-way diners. To Sam, she was simply Audrey, a woman with an incisive mind and an unmatched sense of dry humor. To Audrey, Sam was the only person in three years who looked at her without calculating her net worth or feeling burdened by her presence.

The tension escalated when Tyler crossed paths with Sam near the Chicago Cultural Center. Seeing Sam in a tailored coat carrying blueprint tubes, Tyler sneered, accusing him of scraping by on pity.

"Enjoy the scraps, Harper," Tyler hissed. "By next month, my family will own the ground your little benefactors walk on. And your wheelchair friend? A parlor trick."

Sam took a measured breath, refusing to rise to the bait. "You can buy a lot of things, Lawson. But you still don't know how to earn respect."
