Chapter 2 - The Gathering Storm

The Whitfield corporate headquarters on Michigan Avenue was tense on Monday morning. Walter Whitfield dropped a thick financial dossier onto the conference table in front of Audrey.

Charles Lawson and his investment group had quietly begun buying up minority shares of the Whitfield Hotel chain, weaponizing short-term debt to force a hostile takeover. At the head of their front-line negotiations was none other than Charles’s son, Tyler, who viewed the acquisition as a personal trophy.

"They want to strip the historic properties and convert them into generic luxury condominiums," Walter said, his voice strained. "If they gain fifty-one percent at the quarterly board meeting next month, the original Whitfield Grand will be gutted."

Audrey looked at the numbers, her jaw tightening. "They won't get it."

Meanwhile, Tyler Lawson was waging a petty campaign of his own. Using his father’s influence, Tyler ensured that Sam Harper was blacklisted from every major restaurant, hotel, and catering service in downtown Chicago. When Sam applied for a night custodian position at an independent gallery, the manager regretfully informed him that a phone call from the Lawson Group had made him unemployable.

Word of Tyler’s spite reached Audrey through her mother. Enraged, Audrey decided to stop hiding behind her anonymity. If the Lawsons wanted a ruthless fight, they would get one—not just in the market, but on the ground.
