Chapter 20

"I wouldn't move, Vincent."
The voice came from the darkness in the corner of the study. The heavy leather wingback chair slowly swiveled around.
Vincent froze, the flash drive burning a hole in his palm.
Sitting in the chair was not Julian. It was Sophia. She was holding a suppressed pistol, her hand perfectly steady, pointed directly at his chest.
"Sophia?" Vincent breathed, entirely confused. "What are you doing here?"
"Did you really think your father was the mastermind behind all of this?" Sophia smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Julian is a greedy old man, but he's not very creative. He was easy to manipulate."
"You... you worked with him?"
"I worked for Vanguard," Sophia corrected, standing up slowly. "The hostile takeover was the goal from the beginning. We needed the company destabilized. We needed the CEO in a scandal, and we needed the board divided."
Vincent's mind reeled. "The affair... you planned it."
"It was work, Vincent," she repeated the words from the lobby, but this time they dripped with venom. "Just a job. And you made it so easy. But your wife... Claire is a problem. She's too smart. So, Vanguard decided we need a more... permanent solution for the current leadership."
She raised the gun, aiming it at his head.
"Hand over the drive, Vince. And tell Claire I said goodbye."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study crashed open. Sophia whipped around, firing a silenced shot into the doorframe.
A figure stepped out of the shadows of the hallway, holding a weapon of their own.
"Drop it, Sophia," Claire's voice rang out, cold and terrifying in the darkness.
Vincent stared in shock.

Sophia’s eyes narrowed, her finger tightening on the trigger.
The room plunged into absolute silence, a deadly standoff waiting for a single spark.
