Chapter 16

The annual Moretti Charity Gala was the event of the season, a glittering display of wealth and power held at the Field Museum. The massive dinosaur skeletons were illuminated by warm, golden lighting, casting long shadows over the city's elite.
Vincent stood near the bar, nursing a scotch. He looked entirely alone despite the hundreds of people around him. Whispers followed him everywhere. The scandal was still fresh.
The double doors opened, and the room went completely silent.
Claire walked in. She was wearing a stunning, floor-length crimson gown that demanded attention. Her blonde hair fell in soft, loose waves over her shoulders. She looked powerful, untouchable, and devastatingly beautiful.
Vincent felt his breath catch in his throat. He watched as she navigated the room, greeting board members and politicians with effortless grace. She didn't look in his direction.
"She plays the crowd beautifully," a voice rasped near his ear.
Vincent stiffened. Julian stood beside him, holding a glass of champagne. He had officially "retired," but he still moved like he owned the room.
"Stay away from her," Vincent warned quietly.
"I'm just admiring the monster I helped create," Julian chuckled. "She has you on a leash, Vincent. How does it feel to be a passenger in your own company?"

"I know about the voicemails, Dad," Vincent said, turning to face him. "I know you faked them."
Julian's smile didn't waver. "Prove it."
