Chapter 12

Sophia paced her apartment, biting her nails. The news of Julian's sudden "retirement" had hit the internal servers an hour ago, sending shockwaves through the corporate hierarchy. Nothing was going according to plan.
Her phone buzzed. She snatched it up. "What happened? I thought Julian was taking over!"
"Claire outplayed him," the voice on the other end sounded irritated. "She found the offshore accounts. Julian is stepping down to avoid prison."
"What about Vincent?" Sophia asked, panic rising in her throat.
"He's still CEO. But he's Claire's puppet now. You need to get out of there, Sophia. Leave the company."
"Leave? I worked for five years to get this VP title!" she screamed. "I did exactly what you asked! I compromised him!"
"And you failed to anticipate his wife," the voice said coldly. "Our deal is done. Do not contact this number again."

The line went dead. Sophia stared at the screen, tears of rage springing to her eyes. She was being discarded. She grabbed her coat and her black quilted handbag. She marched out of her apartment, dialing the number of a prominent business journalist.
