Chapter 5 - Whispers In The Cellar

Roman led Clara through the smoke-filled corridor, stepping over the fallen bodies of two more masked attackers. The estate had become a war zone. Smoke alarms wailed incessantly, their flashing red strobe lights casting bloody hues over the antique oil paintings lining the hallway.

Instead of heading down the grand staircase toward the front entrance, Roman pulled her toward an inconspicuous service panel near the linen closet. He punched a six-digit code into a hidden keypad behind the baseboard, and a section of the wood paneling slid open with a hiss of compressed air.

""Inside,"" Roman ordered, ushering her into a narrow, concrete staircase descending straight into the earth. ""This leads to the old wine cellars and the drainage tunnels connecting to the harbor.""

Clara hurried down the stairs, Roman right behind her, locking the secret panel from within. The deafening sounds of combat faded, replaced by the damp, earthy chill of subterranean brickwork and the steady drip of condensation.

At the bottom of the flight, a dimly lit corridor stretched into the gloom. Roman moved with purpose, weapon raised, sweeping every archway. Clara stayed close behind, her hand clutching the fabric of his dark shirt.

As they reached an intersection lined with massive oak aging casks, a figure stepped out from the shadows.

Roman brought his weapon up instantly. ""Freeze.""

""Hold your fire, Boss! It's me!""

Victor emerged into the dim bulb light, his hands raised. His face was smeared with soot, and his left arm hung limp at his side, blood soaking through the sleeve of his tactical jacket.

""Victor,"" Roman lowered his weapon slightly, though his posture remained rigid. ""What happened to the perimeter defense?""

""They had the exterior codes, Roman,"" Victor said, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he leaned against an oak barrel. ""They jammed our comms from a mobile command unit parked outside the tree line. Half our men were taken out before they even cleared the barracks. I barely made it down here to cut the tunnel access.""

Clara watched Victor closely. Her pulse began to race again—not from the gun battle upstairs, but from an overwhelming sense of wrongness.

The scent.

A faint, pungent smell drifted across the damp cellar air. It wasn't the smell of burnt gunpowder or damp moss. It was the sharp, unmistakable odor of cheap clove tobacco.

The exact same smell she had caught when a man slammed into her at the ballroom.

Clara looked down at Victor’s left wrist. His sleeve was torn and soaked in dark red, but pinned near his cuff was a small, tarnished silver clasp, barely visible beneath the gore.

Her breath caught in her throat.

A silver cuff link.

""Roman..."" Clara whispered, taking a slow step backward.

Roman glanced at her, sensing the sudden terror in her posture. ""Clara, stay behind me.""

""Roman, look at his wrist,"" she said, her voice trembling but clear. ""Look at his left cuff.""

Victor froze. The pained, exhausted expression on his face slowly hardened into cold, emotionless stone. He didn't look wounded anymore; the limp in his arm vanished as his right hand smoothly drifted toward the small of his back.

""Don't do it, Victor,"" Roman said, his voice dropping to a deathly whisper. The barrel of his gun rose, locking dead-center onto Victor’s chest.

""You should have let the girl die in the ballroom, Roman,"" Victor said, his voice shedding all respect, replaced by a bitter, poisonous sneer. ""It would have been clean. An unfortunate accident. A stray bullet during a chaotic exchange. Salvatore Marcone would have taken back his rightful territory, and you would have died thinking it was an outside job.""

""You were my father's right hand,"" Roman whispered, genuine fury vibrating beneath his icy control. ""He took you off the streets when you were a boy. I trusted you with my life.""

""Your father was a coward!"" Victor spat. ""He compromised with the city council. He divided the docks! He made peace when he should have crushed the Marcones into dust! And you... you inherited his weakness. You let a catering girl distract you from the entire empire!""

""Where is her brother?"" Roman demanded, his finger tightening on the trigger.

May you like

Victor laughed, a dry, grating sound that bounced off the brick walls. ""The boy is already at the pier. Salvatore's men have him tied to a chair on the barge. But you won't live long enough to reach him, Roman. You never did know how to check your blind spots.""

From behind a row of barrels down the corridor, the distinct sound of a shotgun cocking echoed through the cellar.
